IM OK, may I suggest somewhere in the Roundup area? Or, perhaps, Ryegate area? Land prices in those areas seem to be very reasonable (I'm thinking about buying a 20 chunk around there, myself, just to have a place to run away to!). Fishing in dead Man's Basin is reportedly very good, and the Musselshell River runs along there.
It is an easy drive to Billings, and the Yellowstone River.
Deer (whitetail and muleys) abound, as well as antelope. Elk can be found in the mountains surrounding the area (the Crazys, the Castles, etc.
Finding employment might be challenging, though.
Good luck.

You could combine your passions... build gun cabinets.

My granddad built ours of solid wood. Did such a fine job you couldn't hammer a razor blade into the joins. You don't see that kind of work very often anymore. I'd think a good cabinetmaker could partner with gun shops to sell pieces that are both functional and pretty furniture, maybe sell 'em on commission, but that would be the best place to get your work seen by the target audience.

Now, if I built a cabinet, there would be nails sticking out at random, and no two corners would be at the same angle I'm just not a carpenter, and no amount of practice seems to improve that! (Like someone else put it... I cut it three times, and it's STILL too short!)

Well my Montana friends, it is all coming together. Another trip to look around the end of the month. Then the big move is scheduled for October or November depending on how it all comes together. Been planning this for a loooooong time, years actually. It's time to pull the trigger and we are very excited.....

Jobs? Who has those these day's? Well, that was a part of what I was going to do..Just get a feel for each area I have my eye on..And if none of that pan's out..I have a litle saving's buffer 'till something does pan out. Dont get me wrong..This is very scarey to me! How do you think a custom rod smith would do? It's an idea I've been kicking around..You see, I do custom wraped rod's for freind's, my dad and myself...I do have a freind that owe's me a web site! lol And one thing I have noticed..even during bad time's people still go fishing...alot! I mean..there are alot of thing's I might be able to do..But to be honest..I'm sick of working for other people..I feel it's about time I start thinking about working for myself! And that is why I started posting here in this thread..Instead of starting a new one..Seem's the porch is where all the cool people hang out.

I dunno, but it sounds to me like you've got a lot of skills in working with your hands, and can readily learn more. Like I said... start some relationships with rod and gun shops, do some custom work and sell it on commission thru shops where it will get exposure ... might not be enough to live on but it would be a start in running your own business if you can't fund your own shop up front (and why dilute another shop's business when you can enhance it? that way neither of you is at risk to fail), and a good supplemental income regardless.

We are slow I guess. But we had to liquidate 3 lake front homes, and one industrial property. Plus tons of crap we will no longer need, boats , cars, trucks, equipment etc. We waited too long and the current economy here is way in the tank. So we are coming with only what we need. But we will get there..
