A couple of days ago we checked out Montana's newest State park near Shelby. There isn't anything there yet but a chain link fenced parking area and restroom. You can walk to a rise that overlooks the Marias River, I'll try to get some pics posted soon. I'm hoping that the state will put in a river access point there.

That is the place. The website says there are no facilities yet but there is a parking area with a pit type restroom and the sign says camping allowed in the parking area but no fires allowed. I'm hoping that they will develop a real campground there with fire rings and I would really like them to allow vehicle access to the river for fishing and launching canoe, kayaks and other small boats. It looks like they may pave the road going in and they are bypassing a ranch that the current road goes directly past. I took a photo overlooking the river but it's still in my camera. I'll post it after I get around to downloading the image files into my computer.

Ok, help me out here... We're in TN right now and while it's nice my DW is NOT happy about leaving the big sky state. I told her we "could" look east of the divide like in Great Falls since we can't afford to buy in the Flathead and am tired of 9 months of winter. Having never been to GF what's the difference?
I know I'm surrounded on the porch by dyed in the wool MT'ites but really need some objective views.
We'd have to send our son to MSU tech which I think is possible...
So sit back, sip your beverage of choice and let 'er rip...

I spent half the day in Great Falls yesterday and every time I go there it grows on me more and more. My wife found a few shortcuts through some really nice neighborhoods. All nice craftsman built houses and every house was different. We did notice the big trailer ghetto neighborhood also !
Next time I go I'll try to get some pictures of and in Great Falls. I could never live in TN, the last time I was there some guy tried to rob me. He did not get away with it either.
I'm sipping Hot tea with honey and lemon juice right now. I don't remember when I quit drink anything with alcohol in it and I guess it's a good sign that I won't fall off the wagon if I never even think about beer or when I quit.
My wife would leave me if I tried to move to TN, she needs to be in her comfort zone and that means being around folks who are just like her If you know what I mean ! She is not very fond of chiggers and other bugs and that state is full of them. We would never be able to afford to buy any property there anyway.
I'm looking for tenants for one of my rentals and when I have a vacancy I will sometimes look at the "Housing wanted section of Craigslust ! I found these guys ad, anyone here feel like helping these guys !

Great Falls never felt like 9 months of winter to me. Never more than about a month of solid winter, always broken up by chinooks. Sometimes we'd get a couple weeks of T-shirt weather in February. A few years ago my mom reported that GtF didn't get ANY snow all winter!!
Lots of pleasant, laid-back, old-fashioned neighbourhoods... if you don't mind an older house, there are 50 listed right now in the sub-$100k range -- check it out -- there are even some fixer-uppers in the $30k range! Like this one which I vaguely recall is actually a pretty decent property (of course I haven't been there in 25 years but I did go by it all the time, back then). And here's a pretty little house in walking distance of the river for $70k. And there are a bunch of newer mobiles and modulars, some on owned land, some on rented lots. Lots of options!

How far east are you looking? Do you need employment?

Pics from my neck of the plains.
We may take the "little boats" out for a paddle today and play with some fish. I have a few pictures to share of my neck of the plains.
Rail car in position to be loaded with your next loaf of bread !
I like the sound of the rail cars banging against each other as they are moved around the freight yard just one block from us.
The Conrad freight depot and one of the old sheet metal covered wooden elevators.
The wind farm near Shelby is providing a few jobs as they are adding more wind generators.
The private prison near Shelby seems to always be looking for workers, hummmmm I wonder why !
The new Marias River State Park as seen from near the parking area.
The same as above but with a bit of zoom applied !
The "Teenage Prairie Party Palace" on Ledger Road.

Pizza on the grill, that's a good one, never thought of doing that! Tho I have made a souffle in the microwave! Turned out great, got HUGE, but shrank really fast as it cooled. Next day it was dense and creamy like cheese custard, funny-looking but super-delicious. I just used the standard Betty Crocker recipe (everything in that cookbook, except pies and cookies, can be adapted to the microwave just by reducing the cooking time. Homemade microwave pie crust is still a black art.)
I see from the NWS that parts of MT have over 200% of normal rainfall this month! http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/tfx/data/gra...ulpcntnorm.png
Or maybe it's just that we've been in drought so long we've forgotten what an El Niño year is like! Good for the ranchers and farmers, provided it doesn't rain on the harvest (where are you in the wheat harvest this year?) and good for next year's ground water. Will be interesting to see next winter's snowpack. Prolly be good for frightening tourists.
