The Government is going to outlaw wood burning? How the hell would I be able to heat my sauna (bathing area add water, drying clothes no water) and heat my home? Screw the Government, if they can't read the No UN sign and No Trespassing signs, they get the bullet - no questions asked.

Anymore ideal locations for relocating that are not mentioned here?

Have you done much wood burning? If so, I think you'll quickly find it impractical as a sole source of heat.

Eventually wood burning will be outlawed most everywhere because it releases large quantities of fine particles that cause breathing problems in many parts of our population. It's banned in the Missoula Valley (I believe all types of stoves) and EPA certified stoves are required in many parts of our country.

I love wood fires, but natural gas, propane, geothermal, and electricity are so much handier and require so much less time than burning wood.

Just visit, find some property for sale, and buy it!

If you're looking for a place away from cities and have no need to work, and want isolation, then you have no need to be on a message board asking for people's opinion! The only one that matters is yours. If you like the property, great. If you don't, then look for something else.

People on here can help with information about what the towns are like, what kind of jobs are available, how much housing costs, etc. But you are looking for isolation and living away from people, so that information really isn't relevant for your search.

In your case, just visit, buy the property and live in the cabin that is there. I guess you could build your own place, but that is what is ruining Montana so I don't recommend building unless you want to destroy the very thing you came for.

Hi Cedar, yes I have done some woodburning, most of my life actually. I understand that it is a lot of work but I can tell you there is not a hotter heat than wood heat. I wouldn't want anything else. Wood is also reliable and doesn't shut off when your electric grid does or you run out of propane.

All of these government regulations make me want to second guess moving to Montana.

Maybe Alaska would be less restricted? or Canada? Just a thought, I was totally unaware of all of the government intervention.

I understand what you're saying about just find land and move on it, but alot of land in Montana is beautiful but contaminated by past prospecting, you can't even drink the water. And also most land is government owned, I didn't realize how much was actually not available for purchase. So I am learning here..

Oh yeah I would probably have to build a cabin, most of what I see available for sale on real estate sites are NEW homes or modern cabins that are cheaply built for a quick sale. There isn't anything remotely authentic to Montana about them.

Just rambling..

I've never heard anything about Montana banning the burning of wood. Missoula has restrictions but that's because the air in the valley can get a build up of smokey air during inversions.

If you don't want to live in a new log home and want a cabin that is "authentic to Montana" your other choices would most likely be log homes in the condition of those pictures below. I don't have data but I think that more folks in Montana live in trailers than log homes. I think anyone thinking about moving to Montana really should visit in the the winter as well as the summer.

A few weeks after I took the picture of the cabin in the lower picture the wind took the top off of it.
It's on the Flathead reservation and was called "The Nez Perce Cabin" We use this spot as a lunch break stop when floating the Lower Flathead River (It's on a bench near the riverbank) and you can also drive to it with the right rig. It' on the right bank while floating the stretch between Buffalo Bridge and Sloan Bridge. The top picture is near Polebridge up the North Fork Flathead.

Ever been in the little log house restaurant in Polebridge next to the general store ? It's the other building that makes up "town" ... if that's what you can call it. Was in there earlier this summer. Quite a nice job they have done keeping the place original as much as possible. I'd love to have that place... minus the traffic.
