Default Naturalist looking for that pristine off grid mountain location.. please help

My wife and I are planning to locate to Montana and would like some help in deciding as to where ( what city/county) to relocate to.

We are avid outdoor lovers in search of that ideal setting/location with snow capped rugged mountain views, mature conifer trees, active year round mountain streams and total seclusion.

We are looking for that picture perfect location with a primitive feel and environment. We are looking to be as close to nature as possible. Far away from developments and neighbors. The more snow the better!

We will be living off grid and totally self sufficient.

What place/city would you recommend that is the closest thing to what we are searching for?

Thanks for any advice, we look forward to reading all replies.

Lincoln, Montana. Very simply my favorite place in Montana to get away from everything. I have too many irons in the fire right now so I can't buy land over there, but if I could I would. You like snow?? Lincoln has more snow than a snowman festival. Lincoln has more snow than Santa's back yard. Lincoln has more snow than... well you get the idea.

Along with the snow you will most likely encounter serious COLD. You better be experienced in this type of living otherwise you could end up like some other folks this past winter.

Investigate the area North of Cook City, MT. It is some of the most rugged areas of the state on the border of Wyoming. Montana's highest peak is there along with glaciers and a plethora of mountain lakes all teaming with trout. If you climb a little further North by Northwest you'll drop into the Hellroaring Primative Area. You will not find deeper solitude anywhere short of McKinley in Alaska.

Good luck. Take some survival gear and dry matches.

When we were looking for property last year in North Idaho/NW Montana I came across several listings off the grid around Helmville (not too far from Lincoln, I guess). 20 acres, high up, remote--it looked fantastic, online anyway. A little too remote for us, though.
But,

The day that you tarry is the day that you lose!"

Good luck!

Thanks for the replies. The cold will not be a problem. We are currently living on the east coast and we have bitter winter storms. We don't get the huge snowfall amounts but with the precipatation and wind coming from the ocean, winter temperatures are bitterly cold because of the added moisture in the air.

The off grid living aspect is appealing to us because we live close to 3 huge metropolitan areas. New York, Baltimore, DC, etc. We are surrounded by people and crime. We currently live in a " rural " area and have 5 different neighbors within a 1/4 mile from us. It's dirty, crowded and unsafe here. We can't wait to move!

Keep the comments coming. We are doing some major research on this subject, any valuable info is really important to us. Thanks so much!

Grizz, I was a little confused about the area that you mentioned. Is there a town named Northwest? Or are you saying to travel north/northwest in the area? Thanks

Sorry but you are dreaming. There is no way in hell for just about anyone to live "totally self sufficient" in Montana anymore. Are you planning to buy or rent property ? Are you going to squat on federal or state land? Can you make your own ammunition for hunting ? Will you make bows and arrows to hunt with ? Do you expect to live off of a veggie garden amongst snow covered peaks ? Have you ever even visited Montana ?
Like I said, you are dreaming !
