Well Butte did have a reputation years back as a pretty rough town, maybe it still can be.
Helena is a nice area, the place really is safe and the people here are very friendly. Montana will not suit people who like the big city life but for those who like a slower pace and dont mind driving long distances this is a pretty great place.

I agree Heyoo, i use to live in a small town of 300 for a few years drove 50m one way to work, never locked my house, it was always open, never locked cars, never worried about anything.
The big cities well if you can call them that.. I laugh at people that call Hellena and missoula big cities.. but ayway... i'd lock them, mainly because the tweekers and kids, but you get out in the smaller towns... crime is not a issue...
I think the main reason crime is so low here is everyone has guns of some sort, and people that try to break in and rob a place know that...

As a newbie myself, here are my findings:

The bad:

The produce here is horrible. And expensive.

People here don't know how to merge on the interstate.

There are a lot of casinos, why so many? What good do they serve?

I am finding out it is very hard to find a decent place to rent - part of its my fault, I'm one of the many moving here.

The good:

People here are extremely friendly and helpful. I have never met so many friendly, caring people in all my life.

No government red tape. I went and registered my out of state car, then got my Montana driver licence in less than an hour! I would have moved up here 15 years earlier had I known that!

The scenery is beautiful - except for the refineries, but hey were all slaves to the black gold.

Outdoor activities are endless.

The illegal aliens haven't invaded yet, turning this state into Mexico # 5.
