hi bill, my husband and i moved to glendive about 6 years ago from western montana.......just so you know, montana is HUGE (i didn't realize you could drive 11 hours...going 75 mph... and still not be all the way through the state!) anyway, my point is, don't just pitch a dart at a map of montana and move there. you really need to come visit first. like i said, i grew up in western montana (st. ignatius to be exact) and it is sooooooo much different than glendive. western montana is green most of the year, gets warm in the summer, but not too warm....and the nights cool off. glendive gets super hot (like in the 100's often) in the summer, and your nights don't really cool down much (feels like texas to me). and winters....well, western montana gets quite a lot of snow, but not nearly as cold as eastern montana...i've seen 40 below zero here in glendive (that's NOT including the windchill) and we can get lots of snow here too...but it usually blows away!! western montana has TONS of mountains and crystal clear streams....eastern montana has muddy water and many different landscapes. in eastern montana you drive 230 miles to the nearest target or mall....in western montana you can usually find one well within 100 miles. my husband and i have adjusted to eastern montana and we really love it now ( we are avid hunters and the hunting is GREAT here!!) and we like the remoteness....makes you feel like you're going on a vacation when you get to go to walmart!! so, my advice is come visit the big sky state extensively first....if you are looking for gorgeous mountain ranges with lots of lakes and rivers....may i suggest Augusta MT or white sulfur springs MT (lots of cowboys at both). but, eastern montana is great too! personally i think sydney has more of a cowboy and small town feel than glendive, but that's just my opinion. and one other HUGE factor in montana.....the housing prices. in western montana you're going to be paying for the beauty..... a lot more than you will pay in eastern montana....and i mean A LOT MORE. in the valley i grew up in..mission valley, you will pay $400,000 for 40 acres of land. in, say circle montana, you can get 40 acres of land for $20,000. housing prices are the same way. anyway, just a little input...hope it helps.

oh, and one more thing.....like another person said, not to put off montana, but if you would consider north dakota....Medora ND is ultimate cowboy, unique, fun western town.....and Watford City ND isn't bad either (voted one of the US's top ten cleanest air towns).

The only people I hear referring to or president as an "emporer" or "Messiah" or the like are right wing loons. Why do you idolitize him so much? He is just a smart guy who so far is doing a pretty good job of cleaning up after the most corrupt, dishonest and incompetent administration in the history of this country. , or stay in New York. If your email is indicative of the type of "contribution" you will make to this state, may I second the suggestion that you consider North Dakota. It has more residents of your ilk. Montana is progressive, and we don't need more baggage.

Thanks! I'll look into Sidney. I've thought a bit about ND. I do like the badlands area of Western ND from when I visited last year. But, I seemed to like MT even better.

Thanks, Montana Mom! I appreciate it! These are definitely some things to consider. I have been to MT before in various regions of the state, including the east side. Thanks for the city info. The small town cowboy flavor is definitely what I'm looking for. Any others to add to the list? I wouldn't necessarily be buying anything for a while. I'd want to rent in order to be sure I was happy in the particular location/region before actually owning anything.

Wow, hey, thanks for the "warm welcome." I think I'll take the other posts in this thread as more representative of MT than one individual who just joined in May and has posted two notes (the other of which wasn't welcoming either). I am soooooo very sorry that you are offended at the notion of wanting to preserve freedom of speech and other freedoms guaranteed by our Constitution. I recognize we are only supposed to speak in a manner that is agreeable to those who think Caesar Barackus (oops, there I go again!) is "doing a good job."

By the way, how is he "doing a good job" considering the FACT that he has spent more in 100+ days than all the presidents from George Washington to George W. Bush COMBINED have spent??
  • How is he "smart" when he cannot even figure out the name of his Secretary of Defense?
  • How is he "doing a good job" when he rammed through a nearly $800 billion pork-laden "stimulus" bill through Congress, without giving Congresspersons and Senators time to actually read the bill? Why did he fail to honor his campaign promise about giving five days for the American people to examine the bill before he signed it? What about the $4 BILLION of tax dollars he gave to his cronies at ACORN as part of the bill?
  • Why does he prattle on and on about the environment, yet waste hundreds of thousands of dollars and huge amounts of fuel flying to Iowa for a photo op on Earth Day? This is supposed to be a "technology-aware" president. Why not videoconference? While we're on that subject, why did he waste $600,000 and increase pollution by flying to Denver for a photo op when he signed the "stimulus" bill?
  • How is he "smart" when he makes fun of the Special Olympics? It sounds like he engages in discrimination, to me.
  • How is he "smart" when he laughs about people's economic misery on 60 Minutes (even to the point where the interviewer complained)?
  • How is he "smart" when he sounds like a goofball if there's no teleprompter?
  • He claims to be interested in hearing different views from people. Why won't he meet with the governor of Nevada to talk about how much he has ruined Las Vegas' economy by discouraging businesses from going there? If not for Las Vegas and Reno, Nevada would not have been a blue state in the last election.
  • Why did he allow over $300,000 to be wasted on a photo op for Scare Farce One to frighten people in New York? (And don't tell me he "didn't know." He is the president. The bureaucrats in the executive branch ultimately report to him. He is responsible for their decisions.)
  • Why did he refuse to meet with wounded troops when he was out hobnobbing with the power brokers of Europe and giving an embarrassingly tacky gift to Queen Elizabeth, while putting America down?
  • And furthermore, why have we still not seen ANY of his college grades? Bush's and McCain's grades were released.

Here's some news for you: The administration of George W. Bush is HISTORY. Am I thrilled with all Bush did? Hardly. But his time as president has concluded. It is now time to judge Obama on his job, not to just excuse him by saying "Well, Bush...." We are now an Obama-nation. Your complaints about Bush are about as relevant as if you complained about, say, Grover Cleveland, another two term president who also was not liked at the end of his last term. Quite honestly, if the Democrats had nominated a goldfish and enough people blindly voted for it because it had a "D" next to it (oh, and of course, that it was young and in shape), liberals would still be saying "Well, Bush....." Better yet, they'd probably even say it was "all Bush's fault" that people voted for a goldfish.

How's that "hope and change" going for you? We have seen change, though no hope. Hundreds of thousands of additional layoffs have happened since Obama's coronation. We see car dealerships losing their franchises after Obama took over two automakers, bankrupting these dealerships (small businesses) and putting their employees out of work. We see the historic Pontiac line becoming history. Oh, but he's "doing a good job." Is bankrupting small businesses and putting their employees out of work "progressive"?

Or, is it that you voted for Obama, a man with zero executive experience, hardly any time in the Senate (and campaigning for president during half of that very limited time!), little to no released paper trail, and you simply cannot acknowledge the numerous problems brought on by his Obamanation of an administration? Afterall, if the preceding is true, to acknowledge such things would mean admitting you made a mistake in voting for such a neophyte. We of course know that "progressives" are NEVER wrong.

Oh, and one more thing.... I thought I'd let you know it's spelled 'emperor'. Or, maybe your way of spelling it is the "progressive" way? So, I know we have a living Constitution by personal decree of the "progressives." Can you point me to a "living dictionary" as well? I'd like to make sure I stay "progressive" enough on the modern, chic way of spelling words.

I'd be curious to find out more of what your views are. I'd also like to know what your definition of "progressive" is. (however the he*l it is spelled)

Sure there are some right wing loons, but there are also lots of left wing loons running around.

I think he/she gave an example of his/her views... "Obama good. Bush bad."
