I do recommend you consider Texas. Of course, it's a huge state, so your locale would be dependent on factors other that what you mentioned.

You will also find traditional values in South Dakota (although I don't begin to understand how they elected a major left winger...Daschle). The Black Hills area is beautiful.

Texas is HAWT though...Just sayin!

Default Yep, you're right

My political biases have been taken to another thread. I'll join in presereving the on-topic environment. I just get riled up when I read ulterior political comment wrapped up in seemingly innocent dialogue.

We recently moved to Great Falls from Colorado. It's pretty expensive to rent a decent place, but maybe not compared to California. It is tough to find work though. I have a master's degree in education and it took me over 3 months to find a job, and it's not even in education. We like Great Falls, but Billings has better shopping. The western side of the state is more expensive than the east side, but they are pretty. Great Falls doesn't have any baseball teams for boys through the schools, but there are other opportunities to play and the schools are good. I suggest finding a job first then finding a home. What kind of work do you do? I know "people" who I might can direct you to.

What the heck is that all about?

Bob,
Just ignore stuff like that. I am only familiar with the Flathead Valley. I totally hear you and understand your wanting to get out of California because I am from there myself. I have family and friends from California that have lived in the Flathead Valley for some time now and love it. In fact they say they would NEVER come back to California. I don't blame them. Through them I am able to visit whenever I want and have made many friends that are Montanans that are some of the nicest people I have ever met. In fact if you ever get the chance to check out the Kalispell area I have an awesome church for you to visit. It's a Christian church called Fresh Life and it is affiliated with Calvary Chapel if that is in line with your faith. The important thing is to spend time in the area before making a decision if you can. Especially in the winter! Be careful what you read on this forum though. There are some bitter people that don't want Californians to move to Montana as I am sure you know by now. God bless you on your search!

Most of Montana is "Safe" if you discount the wolves the bears and the snakes.
You would probably feel more comfortable closer to a larger town for shopping, access to medical facilities, jobs.
There are several smaller towns around all of the larger cities. Belgrade, Manhattan, Amsterdam, Springhill are all around Bozeman but offer seperation from the city itself.
Billings has Park City, Laurel, Shepherd, Roundup and Lavina among others.
Even Great Falls has Cascade, Ulm, Black Eagle and Belt.

If you wish to avoid the liberalism you left and look for good basic values, then you will have to concentrate your search east of the Divide. There are places like Thompson Falls, Ronan, Wisdom, Plains and Divide and others that still have some morals, but many of the towns have been infected by the cancer in Missoula.

Your description of yourself gives the impression that you would probably fit in well here. I would reccomend you have a job lined up before you come as they are kind of scarce and do not pay the higher wages you might be used to. Most of us here work 2 or 3 jobs to make ends meet. It isn't easy sometimes, but the people and beauty make up for a lot of sacrifice.

We have most of the really wild eyed libs penned up in Missoula, so if you avoid that place, you will probably do fine.

Oh, I would avoid Helena as well as most of the business and people there live off the public trough through taxes so there is a higher percentage of libs there as well. Butte is historically a union town, but most of that is gone and they are starting to come around to conservatism again as they are having to actually earn their living instead of just strong arming the Anaconda Company.

Most of Montana has good morals and standards. The reason most of our elected officals are democrats is because the larger cities have most of the votes and can override the rest of the state.

A lot of folks all over Montana don't seem to really give a flying rats patootie about politics because they're too busy working, keeping their kids out of trouble and fishing or hunting. I know I sure as heck don't think about politics or religion when I'm out doing this.

Hi Rickers!
Beautiful pictures! I do envy you and most Montanans aren't constantly having peoples political views shoved in your face in the work place, in the schools and everywhere you go. What a wonderful place you live in! As for religion, it is such a shame that you wouldn't be doing anything but thanking God for putting you in such a beautiful place to fish and enjoy. You are truly blessed though!

I am lucky to have made a few investments that have given me the chance to retire early. It's still a bit of a struggle but that's the way life is !
Montana is a tough place to get a foothold in unless you have a few "money trees" My money trees are my rentals, paying for themselves and more.
