Living in the south we deal with a few snakes during the summer months.I was just wondering what kinds of snakes live in montana? Are there a lot of reported bites with the mass amount of people that visit the area?

I have yet to see a snake here in the Flathead, I have heard of one bite which was a highway patrol officer who was doing a traffic stop and walked out in the weeds down by Missoula. That is the only one I have ever heard of.

I've been back here since 96 and the only time ive seen a rattle snake was when we went for a drive up a rd before you get to hot springs(i cant remember the name)that took off way up in the mt toward a lake,in a really dry area.not that common in the valley im told.and im very glad of that!

None up in the Mt Haggin area and no poison ivy or oak just the deer flys that suck the life outa ya.

My wife and I have heard that mosquitoes are bad there in the spring and summer. Is this true?

Not in the Flathead this year. It is wholy dependent on spring and summer rainfall and this year has been very dry so far.

They hatch out and generaly are not so bad, a little deet and all is well.
We found the worst was the deer flys huge and nasty. this was the worst we had seen of them in a couple of years.

the mosquitos aren't that bad. I come from the south, so comparatively speaking, there are barely any. A little bug spray will easily suffice.

probably a dumb question.... but how do the animals like your dog survive with all the deer fly's? The reason I ask is I live in Utah currently and my rottie get bit by flies all the time and I have to spray him down with bug spray, go figure. Any thoughts?

Our 2 labs put up with them. they were getting good at snapping them out of the air and then eating them.
Tried spraying them with Off and they did not like that one bit. Deet is supposed to deter them but did not phase them a bit.
