Camping around Helena and surrounding area
Howdy,
Can anyone share their favorite places to go camping (tent/primitive) and or their experiences at campsites in the area? Thanks!

Many people don't like to share their favorite campsites, for fear of people ruining them.
However, I can share my favorite for that area, since I rarely get to go there anymore;
Copper Creek Campground, near Lincoln, off highway 200. Take the road over Stemple or Flescher Pass to highway 200. or, go up McDonald pass to the Avon cutoff and go over to 200. check your map to see which way to go, Copper Creek is about 8 miles (IIRC) off 200 on a gravel road, between Lincoln and Roger's Pass.
Come to think of it, there are several campgrounds along that stretch of Hwy 200, all the way from Bonner to the Pass.
There are also some real nice State parks along the highway to Swan Lake and Seeley Lake.
Check the Montana State Parks website.

I havent settled on a favarite spot yet..I like em all...but if you want to get away from the crowd's..I would take a look at the hike in camp's, Now if it's posiable..not sure if you have the lil one's with you..But if you cant hike in...the drive up one's normally thin out pretty good durring the weekday's..alot of place's can be a mad house during the weekend's..lol...Boy I've got a heck of a story about a chubby kid and his sling shot! Oh another thing that might help ya out is, grab you a Rand Mcnally Delux motor carrier's road atlas..They have just about all the camp ground's marked...I know I'm not helping very much..but it's my two penny's worth..The main thing is have fun and relax while your out there! "EDIT" Oh yeah..I forgot...If you can float the river's you can find some really nice spot's too!

We were setting up camp at a favorite spot a couple years ago, and my friends had saved me a spot between them, when some out of state douchebag came in and parked their motorhome right between my friends.. mind you there were spots on both sides. When I showed up I blocked their butts in and was about 2 seconds away from a fist fight when they confronted me. They ended up calling FWP and the officer that came out asked them "why the hell would you split someones camp like that?", and then he asked them to move.
I don't give out my favorite camping/fishing/hunting spots anymore, as there are too many idiots and californians coming here that have no respect for anyone or anything. It's going to be a lot harder for newcomers, as a few bad apples have spoiled the pot.

I camped at Lost Trail State Park near Anaconda a few times. One time some young grungy hippy couple kept us up all night playing guitar and singing off key all night and they stole some of our firewood.

Keep in mind that bow season and backcountry season starts soon soooo there will be alot of campers/rigs parked in camping spots early to reserve prime trail heads and such.
