Glasgow is usually one of the coldest spots in the state, all winter, every winter.
I only know what I see on the TV news, I have never been there.
Well, OK, I went by there on the Empire Builder many years ago. That's the passenger train that runs along the Hi-line, as the Northern tier of the State is known.

Hello and welcome,
Here is an older post to get you started, some discussions on the closed Air Force base, weather, ect.
The weather is extreme here, how would pigs do? I would assume they would have to be totally enclosed.
Good luck.

Default A fact sheet for Glasgow, MT

Shilohheritagepork, you can get a fact sheet for Glasgow by going here American FactFinder and input Glasgow for "city/town" (leave out the ZIP Code) and Montana for "State", and then click "GO".

You'll get a lot of demographics for Glasgow, and if you click on "Reference map" (it's on the right hand side), you'll get a map.

Default Valley County Agricultural Extension Service

Shilohheritagepork, if you haven't already done so, you may want to contact the Valley County Agricultural Extension Service for their thoughts on the profitability of swine operations in the area around Glasgow:

The lack of federally inspected slaughter facilities could prove to be an economic concern as you, or the buyer of your live hogs, might be forced to truck your live hogs to some other state, possibly as far as California.

You've got a heritage breed? Cool. I think it's important to preserve the old breeds as well as the modern ones. Maybe someday I'll meet your pigs over a plate of chops or ribs. Dang, now you got me hankering for a nice pork roast with crispy fat on top.

Aside from what others mentioned, pigs are sometimes more heavily regulated than other livestock, so you'd best check on that as well.

Agreed on too damn many regs tho, it's fine to have basic regulations but geez, today's micromanaging is going to kill agriculture in America. Guess they think we can get our food from China, lead contamination and all!
