My fiance and I are looking to relocate to Montana. We are in the very beginning stage of our research, and I was hoping to find some help on here to help narrow down the process. We are interested in learning "local" takes on the housing and job markets, and which cities/towns rate desirable on the "places to live and places to work." I'm an Operations Manager and he is in sales/sales management, mostly in the financial sector. We currently live about 45 minutes west of Boston, MA. We like being close enough to head downtown, but far enough away to enjoy a house with a yard, and a small to mid-size town feel. We're expecting our first baby this April, so schools, saftey, healthcare facility options will all be at the top of our priority list.Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks for your help, and looking forward to hearing what you have to say!!

You may have trouble finding work in your current professions at first especially if you move to a smaller town. I would try to line up a job and place to live before you move if you can.

If you pay attention to these boards around here, be sure to make serious note of the following:
  • we in MT got guys wearin eyeliner and makup
  • we’re fightin for our gun totin’ rights
  • 80% of us are from cali
  • we don’t like them cali folks either
  • we hang out and "visit on the porch" and pass around some of the craziest stuff you can imagine
  • we complain about change... a lot !
  • got blakwater takin over Hardin
  • the highway patrol hassles everyone
  • and we got lots of snow... even in June !
So... as you can see, we are a messed up bunch. Now with all this in mind… come at you own risk !

On a more serious note, welcome. And heed Ricks warning. Housing market... lots for sale everywhere. Price, still up there depending on where it is your looking and I don't foresee them coming down any either. Job market... it's tough all over, what can anyone say. No different here than it is anywhere.

Have any idea what "sector" of this HUGE State you are looking to move to ? Answers to your questions can vary drastically depending on the answer to that question. It will allow you to receive more on point answers.

Oh, and most importantly, no body here like the Patriots… so tell everyone your.... what else.... a Pittsburgh fan !

kalderfer, you can get a fact sheet for any location in Montana by going here American FactFinder and input the name of the community for "city/town" (leave out the ZIP Code) and Montana for "State", and then click "GO".

You'll get a lot of demographic, and some economic, statistics for the community you selected, and if you click on "Reference map" (it's on the right hand side), you'll get a map.
