To expand on the above quote:
Back in the early 1960's my wife and I and our 10 year old daughter lived 3 miles up into the mountains west of Boulder, CO.(Drug capital of Rockies - at that time). Our 150 foot driveway came off the county gravel road at a steep downward incline of about 13%, and ended right in front of our house front door. At 2 am on a Sat night, in Feb (during a hella'va snow storm--about 18" at that time)), a guy in his twenties (high on drugs) had rolled his car off the road and ended up half way down our drive.
I woke up to 'banging' on our front door. I grabbed my 12 ga Win Mdl 12 (Riot Gun) --18 1/2" barrel-- from under the bed, went to the front door (with a 12"x18"glass pane in it, and yelled:"What do you want?" He slurred back: "rolled his car, and wanted to call a "buddy". I then told my wife (behind me: to call the sheriff"). I then told this guy to look thru the door window--showed him the shotgun-- and then said to SLOWLY open the door and SLOWLY step in side. (I was back 10 feet). I also told him if he made any threatening move(s), I'd drop him right there in the front hall!! He came in. I racked a shell into the chamber-right in front of him- he sat on the floor (higher than a kite & mumbling all the time). The sheriff arrived in about 5 minutes and took him away. A half hour later a tow truck arrived and took his car away....and we went back to bed.
Without the shotgun........I don't know what would have been the outcome.
Sheriff called me the next day and Thanked me for using my head.
Also, 1st summer we were retired, my wife and I were 'wilderness camping" (in a P.U.Camper) in the Yukon, a half mile off the road. We had 2 drunken native punks approach our camper in broad day light, with very bad intentions. I put two shotgun rounds into the ground in front of them, and we had no further problems.
3rd situation: All my working career I traveled all over the Rocky mountain west involved with the Mining Industry. All travel was by car. One mid-day I was driving through an Indian Reservation in north central Wyoming and had 3 drunken Indians try and run me off the road. (NOTE: At that time in Wyoming, and today in Montana, you could and (can) legally have a handgun on the front seat next to you---so long as it is not concealed.) I grabbed my
Nickel plated Colt SSA Revolver off the seat and pointed it out the window right at them.......... They braked immeadiately, threw a U Turn and went the other way.
So, I don't care what one of the posts (in this thread) from western NC has to say about guns for personal protection..........I know what has worked for me!
I was raised with guns and have had them in my home and vehicles all my life....I am totally comfortable with the fact, that if my family or I am threatened with bodily harm or worse......I will not hesitate to do what's necessary to handle the situation......legally.

really? please show me the statistics about random acts of violence that support your side.
or the current legislation to outlaw guns?? unless of course you see no problem with citizens owning fully automatic assault riffles and shoulder fired grenades?

I find i amazing how pro-gun people always have a big line of stories about how guns have saved their families lives. Yet with all the unarmed people out there we still have an incredibly low incidence of random violent crimes? Doesn't add up.
Perhaps you are just to eager to use a gun to solve problems?
A guy on drugs knoking on the door? Sounds like a huge threat, maybe he would have passed out if you ignored him. Or you could have just called the police without inviting the guy in, which by the way takes away your self-defense stance since you opened your door with a gun in hand and he was unarmed.
Again, own all the guns you want to, not saying you cant. Just accept the fact that having a loaded easily accessible gun in your house also put people in danger.
"If I'm sleeping and wake up to funny noises that I feel I need a gun to investigate, I'd rather do my dark, bleary eyed investigating behind the barrel of a shotgun. Less accuracy required and more intimidating to any perp."
Yeah until your dark bleary eyed investigating shoots your teenager sneaking home or your brother who got in fight with his wife and came over

...stiffnecked....
I agree 100% with your above post........
The most intelligent thing we can do is........just consider the source of "opinions" such as these...................and hope some day, some place, some time..........he'll be in a situation where he'd "give anything" to have a weapon in his hand....."to save his a$$".

Forgive me....I have violated one of my own "rules to live by":
"Never argue with the uneducated and misinformed.......they will drag you down to their level.....and then beat you with experience."
Oh, and by the way..... would you please proof-read your posts before submitting......you have 6 grammatical and spelling errors in your post.
Perhaps this relates to your attention to detail and accuracy?

I agree with you Organic, there are times a gun being brought into a situation can make the situation worse. I'm an open minded person, I'm not going to blindly argue one side just because its my side. Guns are not the be all end all. I also like the fact that you have the balls to stand there and argue with us all... even if you are wrong.

back to guns for beginners.
another caliber to try is the 32s&w. it also comes in 32mag and the new 327federal. has plenty of power for personal defense, and fun to shoot. personally, for home and walk around defense, a snubie 38 hammerless is one of the best. they are plenty strong with the +P loads. again, try some different guns, visit with other women shooters and practice with some different types.
