Default Jobs, Boulder

1. Re your first question: not everyone depends on the local economy for work and not everyone is in low paying jobs, obviously. Also I wouldn't say the cost of living is higher than all or even most other parts of the country necessarily. Some things cost more in MT, some cost less than in various other places.

2. When you say Boulder, if you mean Jefferson County's Boulder (vs. the Boulder valley/river further east in the state), there's definitely land for sale. Go to realtor.com and/or any of the national realtors' sites and find a local realtor to work with you. How much land? What sort of land (flat, forested, mountainous, accessible, with/without home, etc.) are you looking for? Sounds like you've written another post on the topic but I haven't seen it.

People coming here now can afford to stay because they made a pile of money selling their properties off in California. They move here, buy a home and land for cash, bank the rest, and just work a little job somewhere for pocket money, I guess. That's the only way I can explain it - there really is no booming industries out here, just low paying retail and food service jobs, and people trying to start their own businesses, unless you can get a job with the University of Montana or one of the hospitals. Having lived in in the South for 10 years becore moving out here, I have to tell you there is a big difference. There are some real, honest, down-to-earth cowboy rancher types out here, but there are also a lot of what I call "dress-up" cowboys and cowgirls -people who until recently were living in urban areas, have now moved here and are trying to look the part. Kind of phony, you know, wearing western clothes and driving Cadillac Escalades. I have met some really nice, native Montanians out here, though. Sort of like southern people, but without the accent.

Default Gross misstatements

There is industry in MT (and growing industry, in fact, e.g., high tech in Bozeman, Missoula, Helena, even Butte, etc.), there are gainfully employed and well-paid professionals here, and not everyone here came from CA or sold off properties to move here. Moderator cut: .

had good laid back country folks who is down to earth.I don't think i can a place home if it don't accept the rebel flag, country music, guns, and the good lord.

Well, I welcome all you Sothern boys. Ol' Robert E would have loved to ride the mountains here on old Travler. Hank Williams Jr. lives 30 miles south of me. And yes a country boy can survive. It is the guy use to making the big dollars that IMHO has a hard time. Lots of work, for those willing to work, which is not many these days. (here in western Montana)

By the way Bamaboy, we just spent the day cuttin up two hogs we butchered yesterday. The lard is cookin in the oven, we just threw some chops on the fire, and we just might be willing to share some of the cracklins with ya. Next is deer jerky and smokin the hams and bacon.Yes, be not decived there is still some country left in Montana and we don't plan on going any where else, anytime soon.

Default Julie from Texas

I am moving there from Texas and it sounds like you guys live like we do here! We butcher hogs and make deer jerky! I was nervous about moving but I feel somewhat better now. I am moving with my children...leaving my husband behind. I need to be close to Kalispell for my job...does anyone have any contacts on rentals? I would like to live in even Libby or Troy? Thanks

TexasJulie, we also have pesky little critters that anoy the he__ out of you...like SKUNKS!!!!! My dog wanted out a few nights ago around 1:15 AM and got skunked without even leaving the front deck! Guess what the rest of my night was like!!!! I'm still smelling remnants of the little stinker especially since the dog ran in the house and rolled on my bedroom carpet. So that required a special trip to Bozeman to buy skunk remover stuff from the supply store to treat the rugs. The dog got the old peroxide and baking soda treatment which works wonders...but you get the critters too when you move up here. We also have porcupines and then the raccoons that got into my chicken pen a few weeks ago and had a little massacre.

Good luck with your move. You might not want to move to Libby with all the asbestos problems from the vermiculite mine. That town will be tied up in lawsuits till the end of time. Probably not a very healthy place to live these days.

Come on out to Chouteau County, land is cheap, lots of rednecks and farm folk. Not alot of rebel flag stuff but I don't think anybody would really mind. You need to move to the central or east portion of the state if you want to have a good down home podunk experience, not the west half. I lived in the Missoula area untill recently and it is almost entirely hippies and yuppies, and land costs a fortune compared to the eastern half of the state. I live in Fort Benton and I think it's perfect here. I am really into four wheeling, shooting animals and other good clean fun redneck activities and I fit in just fine. Look me up and we'll go wheelin'!

It must be very a very difficult task to constantly carry around such a wad of bigotry....do transplants from ALL states affect you this way, or just Californians? For the umpteenth time, we DO NOT ALL make piles of money off our properties here, we do not all pay "cash" for our land, I'm already lining up employment for my husband and I because, you again guess wrong!!!!!!!!!!! , we will have to work for more than "pocket money" when we move..........we occasionally like electricity and food. East Contra Costa County where we are moving from is going from Rural to Urban as "cheap" housing looks better to San Fransisco workers; and people out here have always worn bluejeans and cowboy hats.
Please stop judging us all by your standards...you keep condemning us like you know ALL of us personally........I personally get tired of people relocating to our state because Welfare is more profitable here. So you can see there are good and bad in every aspect of every state, people are multidimensional everywhere and I am sorry for any unfortunate experience you have had in the past to make you so biased but..............from my experience I have had the fortune to meet up with some really nice people in SW Montana who have already welcomed us into their homes and lives......so I guess we can't all be that horrible to Montanas in general.
What part of Montana are you from so I can avoid your unneighborliness???
END OF RANT! I'm heading north anyway......
