On this date, January 28, in 1887, in a snowstorm at Fort Keogh, Montana, the world's largest snowflakes are reported, being 15 inches (38 cm) wide and 8 inches (20 cm) thick.

Typical. Hit and run. Walter is really good at hitting us with news but fails, miserably with followup.

I am unaware that every thread must be about people that want to move or relocate to Montana.

I am unaware that every thread must generate a discussion.

In the future, feel free to skip any thread I may start.

There really doesn't seem to BE any more info than that. This is the best reference I could find:

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/03/20/sc...pagewanted=all
Guinness World Records lists the largest snowflakes as having fallen during a storm in January 1887 at Fort Keogh, in Montana. A rancher nearby, the book says, called them “larger than milk pans” and measured one at 15 inches wide. But no corroborating evidence supports the claim.
(This article also asks, "who has seen hailstones as big as golf balls or baseballs?" ... Answer: anyone who has lived in Minnesota!)

The date and location of the monster snowflakes are widely noted as being in Guinness, but absolutely no more info about it. Every source I found quotes the same one-liner as Walter did.

We should not be too quick to judge. Walter has been a great help. The question that I have is when will I ever get to see some of these ?
