I was wondering what the access to CSA's, Farmers markets and the availability of community gardens is like around Great Falls? I have heard great things about the farmers market, but I have not heard much else about the availability of local foods. I would love to discover ways to eat locally. Thanks!

You may be very disappointed as north central Montana isn't exactly "veggie-garden central".

The Great Falls Farmer's Market has not put up their
2010 schedule yet, but here is their page and the 2009
events.

You could also put in a garden on your property and can or freeze produce for the winter.

Missoula has a very comprehensive farmer's market operated on Saturdays mornings and Tuesday evenings in the late Spring to Mid-Fall. The best produce comes from the Hmong folks who grow it locally. But if you want strawberries or much anything else in December, we import it from Chile or Mexico like everybody else!

Why do Montanans only lock their cars during August??

Because otherwise when you get back, your car will be full of zucchini!!

(This is only partly a joke... we once had that happen in Great Falls, a bagful appeared on the front seat from gods know where!)

This year I am going to set out some vegetables mixed into the flower beds. May as well get some edibles for all that watering and work.
