Default Why Are People In Monterey So Friggin' Hostile?

I don't get how this dinky little town has become such a supposed tourist attraction. While it has a beautiful coastline, once you take a drive along the coast, there's really no reason to stay here. Here's what sucks about monterey: Their wharf is the size of a postage stamp. Nothing to do here. The residents are INCREDIBLY HOSTILE. No one smiles, their language is extremely sarcastic, the service in restaurants is brutally bad. The residents are generally very old, cantankerous and quite fat. Most are retired military or have some military affiliation, suggesting that a disproportionate percentage have mental problems or anger managment issues. The people here are just ugly. Physically ugly, and emotionally ugly. I visit Monterey at least once a year since I still have a few friends here, but am ALWAYS glad to leave. Why does Monterey suck so friggin' bad???? The coastline is beautiful, but the people in Monterey SUCK!

Monterey bay and Carmel-by-the-Sea especially are just that: "postage stamp" attractions to clueless tourists. The (overpriced, arrogantly served) food sucks, the people suck, Pebble beach pay for a drive to some golfing ****hole with some stuck up *****.

Go to Big Sur and other parks around this craphole. The wonderful Nature that is the only thing that saves the coast.

Lived there from 2002 to 2008 (New Monterey - couple blocks from Lighthouse Ave). I have no idea what the O.P. is going on about. I found the people to be quite nice be it my coworkers, friends from church, people in service/retail positions - whatever. There are also people of every age, shape and ethnicity there - just like the rest of the state. Believe me, if the people were that bad I wouldn't have stuck around for six years. They're friendly and nice.

Wellyouknow, I agree completely. I can't even stand to look at the residents in Monterey. A bunch of very old, incredibly ugly, fat, arrogant, extremely rude seniors who have absolutely no positive traits whatsoever. A lot of ex military with psychological trauma, and a bunch of wealthy retirees who drive up prices for everything. And the merchants love to rip off tourists and treat them like sh#t. Monterey is such a rat hole.

We're talking about Monterey, as in the state of California on the Central Coast? That Monterey? Yeah, again, I was there for six straight years (not once or twice a year) so I'm probably in a little better position to judge the place than someone who goes there once a year. Its one of the prettiest places I've ever seen speaking of the peninsula as a whole. The people are fine - just as friendly (or friendlier) than anywhere else in the state. There are lots of young adults there too. If it was some foul, geriatric hellhole I wouldn't have lived there that long.

You have really low standards.

I doubt your opinion of Monterey is the least of your worries.

No I am not being facetious or trying to denigrate you in any way. Monterey Co, if you have traveled anywhere outside of it, is objectively a MOD CUT.

Costs are astronomical for everything: food and housing in particular, but most of the local merchants have so little competition they'll charge you a small fortune for their goods and treat you like sh@t since they figure you won't be in town for long to figure out the ***.

The selection of goods is pathetic as well.

Really what's most depressing are the people, not the cost of living. They are disproportionately old, ugly and very salty.

Man, I feel really bad that you had to endure 6 plus years there. Sorry.
