There's good?
No. Don't stay in Salinas. It's not the safest place to be at night. There are relatively inexpensive motels in Monterey that are fine.

The Residence Inn on N. Davis Rd. is a very nice place and in a convenient area to get to Castroville from. Lots of chain restaurants around - safe area day or night.

There's nothing really to see other than the John Steinbeck Museum (which is kind of interesting). Still, I lived there for years, went out at all hours of the day or night and never had a problem. Neither did any of my friends other than a girl getting her purse stolen from her truck (she stupidly left it behind the seat in a parking lot). The only really dicey part of town in East Salinas and I didn't go there four times in the seven years I lived there. Oh, that Residence Inn is nearly Castroville Blvd - just a few minutes to Castroville and actually a good place to stay if you're going to that festival. Its an utterly new and safe part of town.
