Considering a move to Monterey and everything seems ideal except for the live music scene. As someone that plays in bands and loves to attend shows, I have not been able to find any options.

I listen to all types of music, but prefer rock music when it comes to live performances. I am not interested in cover bands, acoustic singer-songwriter types, bebop jazz while being served brunch, and white guys with a midlife crisis playing I-IV-V blues.

Are there any establishments for original music? My tastes tend to be very eclectic (been listening to lots of krautrock, classical and balkan music lately), but any live music will do. Just not cover bands.

I'm thinking it's somewhat limited in Monterey but Santa Cruz county is just up the road (less than an hour) and the music scene here is pretty strong.

Live Music Venues Santa Cruz

Just came across a place called Alternative Cafe in Seaside: The Alternative Cafe: Home

That's something. Now I wonder what people do for rehearsal spaces around here. I suspect there might be nothing.

When I lived in Pebble Beach there was plenty of live music in Carmel and Monterey. We walked from club to club listening to live music.

Jazz
Some cover bands
Some classic-ish rock
Piano-men

Otherwise you're driving up to Santa Cruz.

Back in the day, i lived at 666 Casanova Ave apts.

You could hear the Jazz Festival going on at the Fairgrounds.

Everyone hung out at Oberg's.

There is always something going on if you know where to look.

Indian Summer, a hookah bar, has some chill jazz on the weekends.

Alternative Cafe in Seaside always something fresh and new going on artistically.

Carmel has a consistent symphony

Carbones on Lighthouse Avenue has live music every week as does Jose's which is near cannery row.

The World Theatre, and the Black Box Cabaret on the CSUMB campus has shows going on all the time.

Mundaka has live music in Carmel.

We have annual music festivals.

This is just a short list off the top of my head. If you know where to look and who to ask, there is a lot going on out here.

Given the slight contradiction in the above, I'd say pretty much forget Monterey. Once in a while Santa Cruz has great acts at the civic, Rio Theater, Kuumbwa -- if you can deal with SC's semipermanent hawaiian-shirted oddly smug midlife crisis.
