This is a cautionary thread for other tourists visiting Monterey. DO NOT EAT AT The Old Fishermans Grotto Restaurant on the wharf. We ordered the grilled artichoke, crab cakes and sampler and all were absolutely dripping with grease (the shrimp in particular)!!! I've seen less grease on pizza's from Domino's. The grilled artichoke had so much grease on it that we all got sick even though we were only able to eat half of the portion. I expect better quality from an $11 appetizer. Maybe these were the only items on the menu that were bad. Dont know. Greasy greasy greasy.

Just to balance out the review we've eaten there, ordered grilled fish dinners, and enjoyed it. The fish dinners we selected were not overly greasy. Also we don't typically load up on appetizers before dinner which tend to be greasy, especially if fried. I think I got clam chowder which I also enjoyed. Yelp has quite a few reviews on the place also.

Have had good experiences there.

The place in Monterey I would advise avoiding, except for drinks and the view, is El Toritos. The food is god-awful, but the view is amazing. Best to go to the bar and just drink and look at the view. They can't even do guacamole right there.

Over the year's my mom got to be pretty good friends with Sabu Shake. She & my sister enjoyed dining there often. We had several enjoyable meals at his restaurant.

I used to eat a lot at Baja Cantina in Carmel Valley, I sat a table next to Clint Eastwood at least once a month.
I enjoyed meals at Bubba Shrimp in Monterey. You can not go wrong at Clint Eastwood's restaurant Hogs Breathe Inn. They put out the best happy hour spread I have ever seen.
My favorite above all else is Forge in the Forest in Carmel. Outside patio with tables next to the fireplace. Dog friendly, with dog menu. I sat and ate many a pizza and pitcher of beer there with my dog. Great crispy duck with goat cheese pizza.

Since we're offering restaurants in the area we like....
Try this one: Jeffrey's Grill & Catering - Carmel, CA

Generally, very good, but they've had at least one "off day". Hopefully, you'll hit it on a normal day though.
Used to eat here all the time.

It's probably a lot more cost effective to pack a picnic meal and a six-pack and go eat at a kennel.

While I am fond of dogs, they are not my first choice as dinner companions.

Memo to Self: Scratch Forge in the Forest off the list of possibles next time we're in the Monterey area.

Back on topic, I've eaten at the Grotto in the past and don't recall any issues.

Lived on Wave St about a block from there (so I walked over there for lunch fairly often). It's fine for chain type Mexican food. I remember a few things I've had there I enjoyed quite a lot. Was it authentic Mexican like you get on the East Side of Salinas? Of course not.

I couldn't do it. Because good Mexican is so good, bad Mexican is atrocious.
