Dear Forum:

I will soon be visiting Pacific Grove. I am from the East Coast, and am entirely unfamiliar with California's highway system. On one of the days during my visit, I have to drive up to Portola Valley, which I understand is in the hills west of Los Altos. Mapquest routes me either of two ways:

The first route would take me up Rt. 1 to Santa Cruz; then Rt. 17 (Santa Cruz Highway?) to Rt. 85; then Rt. 85 to I-280.

The second route would take me past Salinas and up Rt. 101 to Rt. 85, etc.

I will be traveling on a Tuesday morning.

In your experience, is one route preferable to the other?

My experience in 12 years of commuting from Monterey to San Jose or SF I found the 101-85-280 route was faster.

Take 1 to 156 to 101 instead of any 68-Salinas surface streets-101 route.

Though the 1-17-85 route is more scenic.

Time of day can affect your trip obviously. There is construction on 101 in Prunedale that is generally trouble free in the daytime unless someone wrecks or breaks down and there is no shoulder to pull off on.

Agreed with 101 route as its more direct and faster flowing vs. Santa Cruz 17.
