While most kids are no longer free range all over the area on bikes and in groups walking around like we were, it's still a very quaint, protected environment and the focus is definitely on kids and families. The lifestyle is very similar to how it was when I grew up here. We're north shore of Long Island in Suffolk County.

The outdoor lifestyle that you now enjoy sounds wonderful and a perfect complement to your homeschooling!

That makes a lot of sense--how the area has priced most families out. And good advice to focus in on Monterey with all of its activities.

And concrete jungle is definitely not what we're looking for! I can't stand Nassau County on Long Island because of this. I'd rather live in a more peaceful place and then take road trips to the sun and cities when needed.

Thank you for taking the time to share your very helpful thoughts!!
Yes, I think you would enjoy it. I hope I didn't dissuade you from considering the area. We really love it. We could potentially live anywhere along the coast since my company allows telecommuting. But the longer we stay the more we appreciate new things about Monterey.

Speaking of community here's a shot of our kids today while skating with their friends doin' the Hokey Pokey at the local skating rink. I guess some things never change.

Here's a photo of the annual butterfly parade in Pacific Grove which the kids enjoy:

My daughter worked in Monterey and bought a home in Salinas. She's since sold it and moved to the SF Bay Area. But, she made a good friend while working there, who moved a troubled son to Pacific Grove from Portland, OR, to be near her mom (his grandmother).

The boy was doing poorly in school and had a bad attitude. He turned around completely in the Pacific Grove schools. She has since decided she'd rather move to the Bay Area for better job opportunities and she doesn't like the fog in PG, but she has decided to stay in PG until her son graduates because he's doing so well.

And he's very involved in sports, and I know she supports him by going to the games. So, from conversations I've had with her, I can vouch for the schools being good and having an active sports culture.

I love PG. It's like a little slice of Disneyland almost lol! So pretty and quaint and the ocean out your front door. I especially love it when the iceplants are blooming hot pink. Just stunning.

It's also a great place for a wedding:

And for a walk along the boardwalk:

And of course watching and learning about sea life:

No, they called it Pacific Grave because of the slow pace! She was bored there as a teenager. She was just a really funny chick, kind of a 70's hippy. I have been there many times, it's beautiful, seems like a great place to raise a family, especially nowdays.

Derek, thanks for the pics! You get what I'm going for--just a simple, sweet childhood. I'm happy for you guys. We don't have a skating rink near here anymore, and the parades are way more boring.

The area looks beautiful. Thanks for everyone's feedback. Time to plan some trips.
