Recently there was a pod of Orcas gamboling on Monterey Bay. Biologists say this was a rare event; they were ID'd as NW whales, not California whales. Did anyone on the forum see this event? Mts Surfer, were you out paddle boarding on one of those days?

Just wondering if anyone had a sighting to share.

We've indeed had some rare orca visits this year. The entire L pod of the southern resident population from the PNW was here in April for the first time in 8 years. We've also had sightings of transient pods that are rarely seen or have never been documented here. I've missed all of the rare pods but was lucky enough to watch Orion, Bumper and Comet (the article got the names wrong) feed on a gray whale carcass off of river beach in May.

Thanks for contributing this! Living on Monterey Bay must be like having a ringside seat to a nature show, sometimes.
