Hi,
I hope there's someone who can provide me with an answer.
We moved to Quebec last year and were dumb enough to trust our current landlady. She handed over her apartment in a filthy condition with several items not working and holes in the walls and floors. Later the noise coming from the neighbours and the basement (machines) added to our dissatisfaction. We wanted to transfer the lease but our landlady insisted that there is no such thing as a lease transfer!!! Since then we obviously have not been in a good relationship.
I also found out that landlords are not allowed to ask for deposits and my landlady has a habit of keeping it. This is our last month so we did not transfer the rent but told her to keep the deposit.
Now she is 'scared'(?) that we'll leave this place in a mess and asked my husband for his passport number and new address 'in the event that she needs to pursue a court case against him.'
I did not bother repairing most things but took photos after moving in so I'm not bothered by this threat.
However, she can be a total pain and I still have to endure her for three weeks... Do I have to give her my new address and my hubby's passport number?

Many thanks.

Let me guess, you rent in a duplex held by old Italian Lady.
these kind of people have a long history of harassing tenants. usualy they are afraid of cops because of their history, so tell them that police told you to not handover these informations and tell them that this is an attempt of identity theft.
and you can call the cops for real if you want.
remember, always rent with property managment and never deadbeat landlord

She can ask all she wants but you are under no legal obligation to give her that kind of information. Some heavy reading but your rights are explained within.
