So I can understand if the hostility is more of a stereotype/crude humor in a similar way. I do sometimes joke against America myself between friends, I guess.

You gotta stay away from that American rightwing media c rap. lol
Seriously you wont have a problem in Montreal for being Asian or American as i've never seen any animosity to the many Asians who live here in Montreal and no one cares if you are American.
Your big problem if you plan on staying will be your presumed lack of French as its not just not knowing French you'll have to deal with its all the linguistic laws/rules/regulations you are expected to abide by as set out by Quebecs Charter of the French Language and its linguistic enforcement arm the OQLF.
You might want to familiarize yourself with the Charter
Charter of the French Language - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Also not knowing French will be a major disadvantage if looking for a job.If you are serious about coming here you might want to start learning French
Has your friend who lives here not mentioned the obsessive compulsive nature of language in Quebec?

I frequently visit Montreal. Only once was I called out for being American, and, well, that had a lot more to do with me defending girls I'd met in a bar from a few crude gentlemen who blurted out expletive perverted crap to them than my being American.

I'm half-Asian(mum was Chinese) and still look it somewhat--never had much issue at all for the six years I lived in Montreal--nor did my family when they visited.

Don't know French? Eh, I don't speak it that well either and that wasn't an issue really--it's an incredibly bilingual city for the most part.

Being an American won't be an issue unless you walk around with a massive Stars and Stripes flag on your chest at all times or if you make it an issue.

I took my wife up there. She knows absolutely no French. She was initially worried, until we got there and she saw that virtually everyone spoke English, or at least COULD speak English.
