A place does not have to be just like Europe in order to feel foreign to Americans...

No, not implying Montreal is like Paris. I was implying there's a larger difference between Montreal/Quebec compared to the States than is other parts of Canada compared to the States.

I seem to remember a thread about this on this forum.

Quebec is very much a North American society. People there are obviously more attuned than North America's English speakers with what's going on in France, because they can consume French media. But culturally, people in Quebec are far closer to the rest of us in North America than they are to Europeans.

(If it needs explanation, I find this to be a very good thing. I find people in Quebec to be very warm and welcoming, very tolerant of differences - ethnic, sexual, etc. - and very egalitarian. Things, I would argue, that aren't necessarily European hallmarks.)

That's not at all what post 17 says. It says that going to Quebec for Americans is like going to a foreign country without leaving this continent.

In combination with the quote i got the impression the post was referring to Quebec as just like going to Europe without leaving N.America,. OK then Quebec is just like Europe.cue Edith Piaf and light up another Gouloise

Again... not really. I guess we all see what we want to see!

In any event, my sense is that the statement is that some Americans might not expect a "foreign" country experience when they cross their northern border. (Pretty sure they expect one when they cross their southern one.)

I don't think I've ever heard Edith Piaf anywhere I've been in Quebec.

Céline, yes :-)

I'm more a Monogrenade fan myself.

.

Perhaps not but her and her songs are pretty much household names here. There are a number of touring artists who do imitations (most cities or regions have at least one, sometimes more) and her songs are also covered by regular artists from time to time, and used in ads, movies, etc.
