Is “Ho-Ma” a good neighborhood to visit if you only speak English?
From my personal experience, if you're on commercial streets, you'll be fine. But the neighbourhood is very French/filled with hardcore P.Q supporters, so take that into consideration just in case.
Take in consideration that HoMa is a rebranding strategy put in place by the local administration to push out lower income residents and speed up the gentrification of the neighbourhood. Its original name is Hochelaga-Maisonneuve (hence the name HoMa), but we commonly shorten it for Hochelaga or Hochelag.
As djesus said, if you stay on commercial streets, you're more likely to receive bilingual service. However, the area has a higher proportion of unilingual francophones than central or western areas of the city. You might have a harder time communicating in this situation if you don't know any French. Knowing a little bit goes a long way to handling most basic interactions.
Here you go: (this might make you hate it, just because of how corny and terrible the song and video are.)
