Default Looking at rentals near Morgantown

Hi all,

As mentioned in a thread in the PA forum, I'm taking an Engineering job in Smithfield, PA. I've been looking round though, and it seems like I might have better luck finding a decent rental near Morgantown, WV - all I need for now is a 1 bed/1 bath or Studio, preferably in a quietish area. I don't need quick access to the College Campus etc, so was looking at living in one of the outlying areas on the North side, as then it'll be about a 30 min commute to my worksite in PA.

If anyone has any recommendations or advice that would be more than welcome - my wife is staying in Colorado for now, but long term we'll either long distance it and she'll go back to College in CO, or she'll move out and go to Morgantown, and we'll drop our rental in Denver and upgrade our one in WV.

On a side note, I'm also in the Army National Guard, but will most likely drill in PA due to the larger units and better opportunities. My unit is currently working on my inter-state transfer paperwork, and then I'll talk to both PA and WV Guard about where I can slot in.

Overall I'm looking forward to the move out East!

price range?

If price is not a factor you should be ok. Craigslist is a great source.

Apologies, should have mentioned - ideally I'm trying not to break the $500/month range. I wouldn't mind sharing an apartment/house with grad students or young professionals, as all I really need is a roof over my head and internet! Theoretically I could afford more than that on the salary+bonuses I'll be getting, but in practice we want to try and play it safe at first.

Morgantown is near the State's major Army National Guard facility at Camp Dawson, WV (Kingwood). You might want to check that out before you choose a unit for affiliation. There is an Artillery unit in Morgantown, and I believe also one in nearby Fairmont. The unit at Camp Dawson is Special Forces.

You didn't mention price range for your rental, but one thing you might want to check is the Sunday Dominion Post newspaper. This is the best time to look but you will need to hurry since the regular school year will be starting soon and rentals become rather scarce then.

Welcome to the Morgantown area!

Thanks for the link and the local newspaper - I'll be using those as a reference in addition to the websites I've already found.

My current MOS is 11B (Infantry) - I enlisted about this time last year, graduated Basic/Infantry at Ft Benning in March this year, and then Airborne School April. Since then I've been with a Scout Platoon in Colorado - I could either go with PA NG and stay Infantry, or do a different MOS in WV. Regardless I'm planning on going OCS, and was on the verge of submitting my packet when I got this job offer, so I'll definitely talk to them about that as well and see what the best options would be.

For price range, under $500 would be good if possible!

I'm retired National Guard (ANG although I also spent some time in the Army National Guard). Your Infantry and Airbourne training would make you a natural for the Special Forces unit at Kingwood, which is just 30 miles from Morgantown. And, the State's OCS is located there too. You really should check them out. It is a beautiful facility in a gorgeous location.

The link cry_havoc provided for Good Start would indeed be a good starting place for you. Best of luck, Brother Soldier!

Thanks - I'm hoping that I can convince my wife to move as well (we're looking at just long-distancing it, but initially I'll move out on my own and then she'll visit and we'll go from there).

I'd love to get into the nearby SF unit, especially after OCS - I'll be talking to both PA and WV Guard to see what opportunities there would be in both states and then go from there.

One of my current co-workers, who grew up in VA but has lived in CO for the past 8 or so years, didn't have anything good to say about Morgantown (bad area, high unemployment etc), but from all the research I've done that doesn't seem to be the case at all.

Well, your co-worker is full of it. Morgantown is a wonderful place. If he is from Charlottesville or went to UVA, they actually think their little craphole is a mecca but Morgantown is far better...
