Not a shock! with being in a new conference, alot of plublicity over football, and having a larger student body. Still a negative in my opinion, but not something too serious.

It attracts students.
The ones who can't perform academically get booted. I don't see it as bad.

Partying in frowned upon in academics. if your school is #1 for it, then its not good for the university and its staff. or the students that don't party. It could be a deciding factor in not getting a job over a graduate of a more mature college.

I'm in the DC area right now and can easily get a good job with my WVU degree. I've been over UMD grads which is a more prestigious school.
Getting a job has more to do with your degree, GPA, references, work experience, and character. You could be the #1 partyer at wvu and be the best candidate.
Trust me a WVU degree will go far. You just get out what you put in.
Not what I enjoy seeing when paying for my kid's college, but I knew it had a rep as a party school and I've now made several trips to MoTown so I got a feel for the place.
If junior's grades go into the tank then it's back home and community college until he grows up, but that will be his problem and not WVU's.
The only reason WVU has this repuation is because the school is in West Virginia & the heart of Appalachia. I have a hard time believing there is any less partying at Ohio State, Michigan, Maryland, Pittsburgh, or wherever. And how is it that Ohio University is first one year, then WVU the next? What changes in one year?

Exactly!
His education will be based on his effort. Hell he can even party, but he needs to be able to perform academically if he expects to graduate or get a job after school.
Ive seen people come just to party and get booted out all the time. Likewise I have seen people party and still pass with minimum effort. Some even get good jobs, but many dont. Most students get tired of partying all the time by their junior year, and plenty do well.
WVU's party rep wont effect him getting a job, just like Ohio state, Wisconsin, and UT jobs dont have trouble getting jobs despite the school rep. Recruiters look at the student, and WVU gives as good of an education as any state school.

It's bad because it leads to a few things happening:
They get booted, which lowers graduation and retention rates, which makes the university look bad.
They stick around but take forever to finish, which makes the university look bad because it lowers 4/5/6 year graduation rates.
They stick around and go into joke majors that have basically abandoned all hope of being academically rigorous. Psychology comes to mind immediately as a major that has been harmed greatly by a massive population non-serious students. That's bad for the university and bad for students who want to go into those fields.

No. WVU has the reputation it has because it's a giant party school. Being in WV has precisely nothing to do with it. It might be satisfying to imagine this is all just some anti-WV, anti-Appalachia bias, but other schools actually don't start partying on Tuesday. The streets in other college towns actually aren't covered in broken beer bottles. Students at other university actually aren't burning couches and cars in the street.

WVU gets the money and provides nothing back to them. The smaller class size lowers the student teacher ratio and gives the good students a better education. The students who do graduate look good.

More money for WVU and more money for Morgantown. Who cares how long it takes them to graduate? College is often the golden years of ones life. Let them enjoy it. Everyone wins.

That is at any university. You go to harvard and major in Art history or sociology and you still wont be able to get a job. Personal bad choice of the student. Either way WVU, and Morgantown, make $$$. Students in good majors have less competition for resources. It increases the demand for students who major in something useful. It doesnt effect the career prospects of scientist, engineers, doctors, accountants, etc. As for the supply of physch majors WVU is just a drop in the bucket. Either way doesnt hurt the school.

I lived in Austin, and knew many UT grads. They partied the same they do at WVU. I currently know many UMD grads and they talk of how they partied all the time. I dont see how WVU is any different. It is up to the student to work hard. WVU provides a great education but the student needs to take advantage of it.
I honestly think it is good for WVU. WVU is LOVED by a large part of the US population, except butthurt Pitt and VT grads.
People from all over the US party at WVU. It is not limited to WV residents.
Ill tell you why WVU has this rep. Because it is so affordable it gives poor families a chance to send their kid to school. It is a class issue. They are more likely to party. WVU is also willing to give students who didnt do too good in HS a chance at an affordable education. If they improve they can make something of themselves and if they continue to blow off school than they drop out. Many schools wont give troubled HS students a chance, unless it is a community college. I was a troubled HS student who is now a growing professional, and I owe it all to WVU.
We are a blue collar working class school, and some snobs look down on us.
