I am defending the behavior, but admit it just needs more regulation.
Burning couches is tradition. The problem is the police try to stop it so it goes underground and leads to accidents where cars catch on fire. There needs to be an area designated by the police where people can burn things. A&M does this to great success. The police state will never crush the Mountaineer spirit.
The thing that needs to happen is that the couch burning needs to become an "Real" tradition. Where there is a designated place on or off campus that is open for controlled fires. There could be student groups that organize it, it would be kinda like what Auburn does with the trees. This would be safe, fun, and a great way to prevent riot like fires.

Exactly. Lighting a fire to celebrate a victory is WVU tradition. It is going to happen. The city should support it, and control it, instead of trying to stop it and make it worse.

But what is happening now is out of control. We need organized couch burnings, not students throwing their furniture out in the middle of flowing traffic and setting it on fire (which is illegal everywhere)

Well right now an organized couch burning is illegal, so nobody can organize one without getting in trouble. The problem is with the law and government and not with the students.
If WVU wins tonight it is going to be crazy and there will be fires, as there should.
Just drove from Towers, thru Sunnyside (w/one vehicle out of commission on the way) to High St. Plenty of traffic & pedestrians, but a very pleasant "winner" attitude prevailing. Not threatning in the least.

It is never threatening unless you are wearing the wrong Jersey.
After a win their is a sense of companionship and celebration among fans.
