Uh oh!! Watch out, the gun crazies will start to threaten you now....

This guy used a 9mm handgun to carry out all this destruction. How about people who have restraining orders filed against them should have their guns restricted? Oh no, the threats will be coming my way now.

Guns are perfectly safe for the average human. Some people should not have them. Would you rather that he used a knife, or fire, or explosives, or a vehicle? If one of the victims had had a gun they might still be alive.

It was a domestic situation. He could have used any number of weapons. He just happened to use a gun. You can't stop sick people from doing irrational things just because you restrict guns. Restrict guns, and you limit ordinary peoples' ability to defend themselves. Jurisdictions with the most restrictive gun laws have the highest violent crime rates. Criminals don't obey gun laws anyway, and those who do obey them are defenseless.

Why mention it. It was a domestic situation that could have happened anywhere. It really had nothing to do with the community or The University. Jealousy, love triangle, and love gone sour can lead to this sort of outcome if someone becomes irrational and acts out on it.

No threats here. I agree that it is a good idea. If you do or say something that will cause a judge to issue a restraining order, with few exceptions, it makes sense to "restrict" access to firearms contingent to that order. The problem with restraining orders is that it is just a piece of paper and a person intent on harm probably doesn't care about the consequences.

An even better idea is for the person filing for restraint to be armed for self-defense, just in case the "restrained" person decides to borrow his uncle's home defense shotgun and violate the restraining order.

Well, some people shouldn't be driving cars either, how do you know who shouldn't have them. There is no perfect way to know, but I'd venture to say that anyone who has been convicted of a violent crime shouldn't have one, or those with a documented history of threatening others, or schizophrenics for example. More than half the households in our country have guns. It is a centuries old tradition here, but very few have problems with them Almost nobody who has a gun permit has a problem with them, because those people are screened to insure they are not criminals. Convicted criminals can't be trusted with them, or with anything that could be used as a weapon. A case could be made that some of them shouldn't be allowed to have a car.

It is not an issue that the average person shouldn't have guns. In Switzerland, every adult male is required by law to have a fully automatic rifle in his home. They have very little violent crime there. Canada has restrictive gun laws, and per capita their violent crime rate is higher than ours. Same with Australia. When you have restrictive gun laws, only the criminals have guns because they don't obey the laws.

It is, however, a very common left wing notion that if you pass restrictive gun laws, criminals will somehow decide to obey them. Those beliefs are based on fantasy, feelings, and false beliefs... not on facts.
