Hi. My wife and I are considering moving here. I have not visited yet but she spent a few days around her interviews and very much enjoyed it. We are moving out of NYC definitely. We both enjoy outdoor activities and are looking for a more mellow place to live and increase quality of life/decrease cost of living. We are in early our 30s with no kids. At least one of us would be working for WVU hospitals.
Understand threads such as these may provoke perhaps disproportional positive and negative comments from both advocates and detractors of the town. Any measured replies would be much appreciated. I have read a few posts thus far trying to get a feel. Aware of suboptimal roads/infrastructure, natural beauty, and reasonable housing costs. I consider us reasonably cultured, friendly people. We have lived in three boroughs of NYC over the past 5 years and have a love/hate relationship with the city. We are looking forward to a change. FWIW, we are also considering South Texas for work. I can provide other details if helpful.
Leaving NYC for either Morgantown or South Texas; yeah, that's a disparity. I loved living in Morgantown, but be aware that it is a college town. There are, of course, plenty of options for housing, employment, entertainment, etc. for those not in college, but bear in mind that there are a lot of students. With that said, if you like outdoors, small town/city feel, entertainment options, and proximity to Pittsburgh and DC for day/weekend trips, then you can't go wrong there.
Thanks for reply elewis7. I'm assuming there are quiet neighborhoods removed from most of the student populace?
Star City, Suncrest, Westover, and Cheat Lake are away from students. I would say Star City and Suncrest are the best locations if you are wanting to be close to everything, but away from students.
Also, as it seems you're aware, the town was poorly planned with regards to its layout and traffic gets bad when students are in town and when there is a football game. This is my biggest gripe in living here. We really need a 3rd bridge across the Mon river to I-79 to help alleviate traffic. There is going to be a lot of expansion on the west side of I-79 so I wouldn't be surprised if another bridge is built sometime down the road to connect directly to these new developments.
In addition, for outdoor activities we have the Mon River trail and Cooper's Rock State Park. I always see people (mainly students) riding bikes around town when I go on a walk. I would consider Morgantown to be a mellow place. It's not nearly as fast paced as NYC. Quality of life and cost of living would definitely be better here than in NYC, in my opinion.
The students make up half the population. You think they all are confined to downtown? WVU isn't even just downtown.
Obviously nobody is confined to downtown as any student can drive wherever they want to around town. However, the majority of them live downtown. There are plenty of quiet student-free neighborhoods in the Star City/Suncrest, Westover areas and Cheat Lake. You made it sound like they are right in your backyard no matter where you live, which is not true, unless you live downtown where all the apartments and student housing are.

There is always the option of locating in the Cheat Lake area outside of town toward Maryland. I doubt the student population would be a problem out there.
