MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- West Virginia head coach Dana Holgorsen signed a six-year contract extension, Athletic Director Oliver Luck announced this morning at a surprise press conference.
Holgorsen's salary will be $2.3 million under the new contract up from the $1.725 million he would have been paid this year. His base pay is $250,000 and the remainder comes from supplemental revenue generated by the athletic department and private sources, according to the University.
The contract calls for yearly raises of $200,000 in year two and three and $100,000 in years four and five. There is no raise in year six. The deal comes with a $2 million buyout, said Luck and signifies a "significant commitment."
I imagine he would stay a few years since WVU is a good team right now, could easily make it to the playoffs, and has championship potential.
If we the ability, but Wvu is far from being a program that is "too good to leave". Heck Rich Rod would have had it made here if he would have just stayed, but that didn't stop him.

Rich raged quit.
He almost made it to the national championship but failed short.
WVU is paying really well and the team is good. There are very few teams that could poach him. Also his style is very big 12 and wouldn't work in the sec or big 10. I'm not saying he won't leave but I imagine he would wait for the current team to develope more. They are nowhere near their peak.
This should be an interesting season for the Mountaineers..Coach Holgorsen has proved to be very capable so far. Glad he is "officially" signed on and ready to lead the team...again..it's going to be an interesting year! Can't wait...

I'm not saying he'll leave either. He stated that he liked living here and liked his position in the new Big XII. I'm just saying that as a program WVU isn't in a position to where it can keep up and coming coachs forever. WVU is on a level as a final steping stone for good play callers. But we are doing a good job of building our program to elite status. If we can keep Holgs we might gain speed like Oregon or like VT did a few years ago. What we need is one really great season this year, which will affect recruiting and secure the future of both being competitive and having a good coach.

There are maybe a dozen programs in the country that are so good any coach would bolt to coach there.
If you take those out of the equation, we are competitive with anyone. He seems to like it here and he has good relations with his boss. I would think he would think hard before leaving.
West Virginia manhandles last year's Pizza Bowl champion, but lets off the gas in the 4th. quarter so as not to score more than 70 points.
ShPitt is demolished by the FCS (AA) Youngstown State Penguins, starting yet another year of less than mediocrity.
Syracuse loses to Northwestern. Maryland edges William and Mary by 1 point. The ACC sucks, and is going to suck even more next year.
Ohio U. beats Penn State, proving there is not a quality BCS level college football program in the whole state of Pennsylvania.
Ohio State had a surprisingly good outing.
The season is already off to an interesting start.
