I keep reading that mortgage brokers are best found through referrals, but is that the only way to find a good/trustworthy/reliable mortgage broker? I don't know too many people in my area who have purchased a home so don't feel confident in going with just anyone's referral.

Raleigh, North Carolina.

Also, does it make a difference to use a local broker vs. an online direct lender? Is one better or worse?

in my opinion you should use someone local. They will be more familiar with the rules and regulations in your area. Plus, a profit is going to be made my whomever does your loan, best to keep that profit in your area to benefit your local community.

I know a excellent broker in your area. Feel free to private message me and i can provide you a name.
