I signed up for my local credit union in July with the intention of trying to get a home loan through them (and ditch big name bank in the process).

I went into the CU on Saturday August 13th and talked to someone about a loan. He said, it's Saturday so we can't do any paperwork today but a specialist will call you Monday. So Monday morning (10am) the specialist called and we talked and he said he'd email me an application with all our basic info.

He said to fill this out and fax it back to him with copies of tax returns, pay stubs and banks statements. I was prepared and had all these documents ready. I faxed them to him by noon just 2 hours after talking to him. I called him and left a message asking if he'd received all my documents. I didn't hear anything. I emailed him Tuesday asking the same question (did you get the docs). That's all I did, one phone call and one email. I didn't hear from him all week. Today at about 4pm I got an email (and keep in mind this is a week later) that said (in reply to me asking if he got my docs a week earlier):

"Let me check the fax machine"

My confidential docs have been sitting on a fax machine for a week and he hasn't even done anything yet including remove them from the machine? Is this par for the course or should I be concerned that I have a flake already? Not quite sure why he didn't just check the machine THEN email me back.

I was trying to move somewhat quick because we found a condo we might be interested in but if it takes a week just to pick up his fax then I won't be seeing a loan until early 2012 or later!

Some credit unions are fantastic.
Some are, well..... "less than fantastic."

Is the specialist in your branch, or in a loan processing center a hundred miles away?

Ask the manager for a different loan officer, explain situation. Unless it is a tiny CU there should be more than one.

Its also possible that the "fax machine" is really an inbox on his computer. It would be interesting to know if thats the case.

It probably is an e-fax, but you still got a sucky loan officer.

Wow. I would never respond to one of my customers that way.

I would recommend finding a new lender.
