The builder just completed building my home. I retained the services of an engineer to perform a framing inspection (rough electrical, plumbing, etc) before the walls were installed. Is it a good idea to have a second inspection prior to my first walk through? Or is it just a waste of money?

YES, have one! And again at the one-year point, when your warranty runs out. We did and so, so many things popped up. It's the best few hundred dollars you can spend.

I agree; however, the inspector we hired did both the predrywall and preclosing inspection, then told us not to bother with the one year inspection. He felt it would just be a waste of our money.

After eight months in the house, we agree.

Absolutely have an inspection before closing. You'd be amazed the things that can turn up that can be easily fixed before you move in and before the builder has his money that will be a pain after you move in and have to live in the middle of repairs and after the builder has his money and has moved on to the next priority (not that they won't fix it if it's under warranty but that scheduling repairs to be done can be an issue).
