As far as I can tell, in Seattle, the only thing $150,000 will buy you is a vacant lot. Utilities included.

Anybody? You need a vacant lot for the same price of a 4 bedroom 2 bathroom house anywhere else in America?

Buy now! Before you're forever priced out of the market for vacant lots.....

I think the point is, there are more places than you can count where you could buy a very nice home for $150,000.

I feel sorry for people who have always lived in expensive areas and grow up thinking THAT is the norm. They have no clue what life is like around the rest of the country. You can really live a decent life in a lot of places WITHOUT having to go into huge debt for the rest of your life - believe it, or not.

A studio/small condo in a ok neighborhood or a rundown fixer-upper in the ghetto. I live in the NYC metro area.

of course you do

But hey, you don't have to! Maybe one day you'll check out the rest of the country and find more affordable living too.

Do you know of anywhere in your area…where you could find a small nice home or condo for $160,000 or less? We have about $160,000 in cash to spend. We do not want a mortgage. We are minimalists…who spend most of our time outdoors anyway. A safe, decent, area for kids is the only criteria…bit it’s a must.
Haha... in the Bay Area (where I live), $160,000 will barely get you a single-wide trailer in a lousy trailer park! Even with the real estate market going down, it's tough to find anything near that price range - except maybe in North Contra Costa County, where you can find some foreclosures for less than $200K. But you said "safe area," which doesn't apply to where you'd find these homes.

In the metro area:
1800-2100 square foot
3 bedrooms
2 1/2 bath
25+ years old
ok sized lot1

Move out state into the rural areas and you could get a huge old home with big lot and in great shape - might need to look for awhile, but they are there.

Here's a Link to the results of a search in my MLS. These are the 82 properties currently available in Somerset, Hunterdon, & Morris counties in NJ, priced at $160,000 or less. No other screening criteria were used. And these are three of the wealthiest counties in America.
