Depends on your situation. I've read a number of posts describing situations that may need a professional opinion to determine their eligibility for the credit. Read the guidelines and check with a tax professional if you have questions.

SadieLu is on a distinguished road
The amended return, Form 1040X, is simple when you're just adding on the credit. If you get confused you can call 1-800-829-1040 (IRS) for assistance in completing the form. Make sure you check the box for letter A on Form 1040X form to have the IRS update your address if your last return had a different address. I'm also advising my DD to include a Form 8822, Change of Address, to make sure the check goes to her NEW address!
Like Jas1999 suggested, I would include a copy of your HUD form just-in-case.
Please, don't pay anyone to do it for you! Too simple and a waste of your money. (hope there's no CPAs reading this)

AND...make sure you (and spouse if you filed joint) SIGN the 1040X!!!

Sadie, thanks for the information. I close on my home next wednesday as well. I will be amending my 2008 taxes, i'm not eligible for the full amount, but every little bit helps.
