Here's the situation - my husband and I have been looking at properties in Colorado. We are looking in the $300k or less range with at least 50% down payment.
We're having trouble finding funding for the remaining amount as my husband is not a US citizen and does not work in the US or for a US company. I am a US citizen but am essentially not working due to visa restrictions in the countries we have been living in for the past decade.
I've talked to a couple of mortgage brokers who have suggested that the mortgage be in my name, however, I cannot qualify due to a lack of employment. The lenders they have spoken to are not willing to consider allowing my foreign husband as a co-signer, despite the fact that he makes an excellent income and has excellent (although foreign) credit. The big banks have essentially stated that he cannot have a mortgage due to his residency status.
Any thoughts or ideas on how to secure additional funding? I have looked at houses in the $200k range to purchase for cash, but they do not meet our needs.
