500 miles at under 4000 rpm= under 35mph riding which pretty much limits me to my neighborhood. Yes, plentyof time to master the controls on this bike but its hard to get out and ride when I know I won't be going anywhere.
On the plus side I have met a lot of neighbors I never knew before. I would say this reak it period is a downside to having a low cc bike. At least a bigger bike could handle faster riding right off the bat.

Several schools of thought on Break-In... the one written by lawyers for the manufacturer (most mechanics think this is a downright Stupid method for break-in), and the rest. You didn't mention Which 250, but I'll hazard a guess that it's the Kawi 250, since ALL Kawasakis, regardless of engine size (or year) have that same, exact, factory break in.

More info over here:

Thanks for the link...yes, its the Ninja.

It would seem questionable that all models have the same break-in period.

I will check out the link.

I think that is a bit too restrictive. Keep it under 4,000 rpm for 100 miles or so then start taking it faster. What you really want to avoid is steady cruising. I suggest finding a twisty back road and playing road racer. Put the bike in third or fourth gear and vary the speeds a lot. After the 500 miles change the oil and filter. Then ride the hell out of it. So long as you don't over rev too much it is a very tough engine.

My GSX-R 600 wanted me to keep it under 7K for the first 500...it was hard. Not because you can't go fast (I can kiss 90 keeping it under the magic 7), but because the damn thing just BEGS to be wound up. I had a hard time keeping it under 7K out on the highway going to and from work.
