I know the ATV has some good agricultural uses and for hualing out game for hunters it is handy but why do the majority of people seem to ride them for pure recreation over a standard dirt bike?
Your comparing apples to oranges here.
I used to ride a dirtbike, bought my first one at the age of 36. Kept with it until I hit 40 and didn't see my skill level increasing all that much. Went with a quad instead.
Our family does have a Polaris RZR and we do enjoy it. It's a different type of riding though, more relaxing than hammering thru the trails on a bike. A lot of times we come off the lake and want to take a quick blast around and all you have to do is just hop in and ride. On a bike you've got to suit up, boots , helmet , googles etc.
Now a good friend of mine that is a nut on a quad kind of laughed and said "what are you going to do with that thing ?!" When I bought it... I thru him in the passenger seat and took him for a 50-60mph blast thru the trails and heard him laughing the whole time. When he got out he said it was a blast. So they can be fun.
I started with an ATV (Grizzly 660 and Renegade), and have since added a dual sport bike (WR250R) and most recently a RZR. All are fun...and all do some things better than others. The bike takes the most care and skill, and is the most likely to dump you on your butt. Still, I really enjoy the ride. The ATV is better in wet, swampy or snowy conditions, and faster in some conditions. Some of the best ATV riding happens after the snow starts. I got the RZR (side x side) to keep the wife interested...and have come to really enjoy it. We can ride together, talk, carry a decent load of gear and still go anywhere a quad does, nearly as quickly. The main advantage of the bike is flexability...being a completely street legal dual sport, I can ride it anywhere, it doesn't have to be trailered to and from the trail head.
I rode motorcycles from age 10 to age 45 and health reasons stopped that. Now looking at buying Polaris 800 side by side so I can still have fun without sitting at home moping.
There is no comparison between a dirt bike and a quad runner. When I was young and stupid I was a motocross racer, so I guess my skill levels was high on a bike. I could take a bike to places you couldn't walk and up hills that couldn't be climbed without rope.
The quad runners, are really good for ranch and farm use, a bike is not a good choice for this.
Some of the new 4 runners, like the Rhino are starting to get the size of small 4 wheel drives and about the same price. I would only consider the 4 wheel drive truck or SUV for the same use.
A atv lets you and the wife enjoy a beverage while riding, it's much harder to do on the dirt bike.
Yes I know it is still considered drinking and driving.
it was a joke.
I was going to say the same thing. I can also enjoy a cigar while cruising around the lake.
I do miss my bike on the dunes. There's nothing like the feeling of a big 4 stroke bike with a paddle tire on it in the dunes.
