I saw a Ural bike with side car that looked like it could be a German BMW ww2 if it just had a MG34 or MG42 mounted on it. I have also heard they are notoriously bad as far as reliability.

A less-advanced, less-powerful, and less-reliable version of the old air-cooled Volkswagen engines. Base 750cc motorcycle starts at around $8,000.

No thank you.

That is kind of what I am hearing. I have a Dyna 05 I love. I would not trade it but maybe for a Triumph Bonny.

I love the one called a "Solo" ~
Bikes are only worth what someone will pay for them. Id rather pay lots for this (t)rusty old mule than less for a new generic bike.

I hope not too off-topic but these are nice, also. If I ever go back to MC's from scooters, this will be high on the list:

I love the look of the Ural. There were a few at our work "car show" a few years back, one was painted up in O.D. Green, had the side car, and some camo netting on it, along with some other odds and ins. It was a very cool looking motorcycle.

I've heard the electrical system is rough and the alternators have been known to explode like a grenade. Some have "fixed" these, others have apparently removed the charging system and simply plan for rides that are less than enough to drain the battery.

The engines themselves are fairly simple design, and based on the old BMW engines from the 1940's...then reversed engineered by the Russians. Honestly, I'd rock one. They have a bit of character...but I wouldn't pay new prices for one, simply not worth it.

Ha, beat me to it. You should also NOT buy a Royal Enfield, unless you're a master mechanic and don't mind having to tighten every bolt, replace broken pushrods, etc. every 100 miles or so.

That thread is the best advertisement for Urals there ever was
Too long to follow, post-for-post, year to year, but I think 5 people bought them through the course of it

There are people who say HD's break down, too. My Stella and MG were going to leave me stranded, according to people who were not me, but they ran daily, without without missing a beat.

I would never let a few internet posts be the basis for my opinion, but if I did, it would be this:
A testimonial to Ural's improved reliability - Page 2 - ADVrider

I owned a Ural at one time....

The chrome is horrible and almost all metal rusted or pitted terribly during the winter in storage where all my other bikes didn't.

Keeping up with other bikes was tedious (downhill with a back wind helped).
