Not sure which carriers you're referring to, but usually, a newly decommissioned ship with go into mothball storage first and a ship that's been mothballed for a long time will be sent to the scrap yard. A newer ship can be placed back in service much quicker, if needed, than one that's been mothballed for a number of years.

Ex-Forrestal was sent down to Brownsville, TX months ago. Ex-Saratoga recently arrived; there was a press photo of it passing the lead class ship, well on its way to razor blades, but as I said, they aren't showing up on the public satellite sites yet.
Spent some 'quality time' on the Indy and the Ike way back when. Recently had lunch in the shadow of what's left of the Kennedy.
