A friend of mine showed me his collection of helmets that would have otherwise been his head. They were all full-coverage style.
The first one was just scarred and battered all over.
The second one had a hole about 1-1/4" in diameter punched in it about 2" above the face opening.
The third one had vertical scars running right over the shield and the part covering the mouth. He told me that as he was sliding along watching the asphalt go by a couple of inches from his eyes, he was thinking, "Man, I'm glad I got a full-coverage helmet." If he hadn't, he would have left his face smeared along the pavement.
I had ridden motorcycles without a helmet when Maryland had repealed its helmet law. After seeing those three helmets, I decided that it was something I'd never do again.
When I was a youngster I wore an open faced helmet up to about 17, then I saw a full faced helmet in a local shop 4 sale cheap, I bought it and never looked back, I wish I would have saved all my helmets, they would look cool on a shelf in the garage.
