Pan's Labyrinth

I don't ever remember being so disappointed in a movie in a long time. They called it a fantasy/fairy tale??? First it was done in Spanish, with English Sub Titles….I was shocked at the content of violence…Sergei Lopez delivered a characture portrayal of a psychopath, narcissistic lacking conscience, representing a government completely infected by emotionless leaders. I saw nothing good about this movie, and question those who would deem this entertainment, other then the special effects. It was to me, brutally violent…dark and the dubbing distracted from the emotions emitted by the actors. Just didn't see what all the hype was about, especially the reviews…as I said, kinda makes you ponder the fact, what does American Society deem entertainment today?

What are your thoughts on the movie? Is it me?

I thought it was one of the best, unusual and brilliant movies I have seen. Its in sub titles-- OF COURSE-Its a foreign movie! It is not for kids, but was an amazing movie experience. The nastiest villain in a long time, brutal war scenes, but thats war.I recommend it to any movie buff--who understands its a foreign film and is not dubbed

Exactly.
Not only was I not disappointed, I was blown away by the creativity, dazzled by the sets, impressed with the storyline (on several levels) and thrilled with the acting.
It was in Spanish because the moviemaker and his cast were Spanish.
Sometimes I enjoy stupid movies like Talladega Nights.
Sometimes I like feel-good fluff, too.
It's relaxing to just passively sit there and be entertained.
But a movie with real substance makes me pay attention, and that's what Pan's Labyrinth was for me.

I couldn't even finish watching it! I too, was very dissapointed. The fantasy part of the movie was great, the creatures were great and the fantasy story line was great. Too bad that isn't all there was. It was like the took a WWII movie and a fantasy movie and they got all mixed up on the editing table. The violence was extremly graphic and ruined the whole movie for me. I have no problem with foreign movies or with sub-titles, I watch them frequently. It's just if I wanted a war movie, I'd get a war movie and if I wanted a horror movie with torture and graphic violence, then I'd get a horror movie. But I don't want either of these things in my fantasy movies. They don't fit.

Thats why it was rated "R".I read up alot about a movie before I spend my money, that way there are no surprises or disappointments. It deserved all the alcolades and awards it won...The pale man chasing the girl had me on the edge of my seat

I wonder if maybe when it comes to the genre of film fantasy, different people have different expectations.
I thought the movie was awesome, but I am sorry y'all were disappointed.
When it comes to the brutality, I guess I was kinda prepared for the worst because the reviews, while they didn't have spoilers, definitely said this film was not a fairytale for kids. I loved everything that had to do with the rebellion.
I guess this is a melding of two storylines that just worked very well for me.

I agree, and there was so much info on the movie and many warnings NOT to take kids.It was indeed brilliant movie making. My 85 year old mom went to see "knocked up" even though she read all the reviews, and we warned her it was "gross" in parts. She was just "shocked and appalled" at it and complained and complained,,I think some of the warnings just entice folks

well I wasn't prepared at all...and I've watched dubbed movies before and enjoyed them..but this, took me way off guard. First, I didn't know it was dubbed....and never expected it to be so violent....it shocked me....and I don't believe, regardless my mood, I wouldn't have liked it.

Felt the same about Privet Ryan, the dark mood of that movie stayed with me for days..and although I watched Schnidler's List, and thought it was very well done, I cried and cried.....it really upset me...Pan's Labyrith was no exception, and yes, the animation and special effects were splendid, but there was no way, they took away the shock of the violence and to me, it was just a horrible movie, I guess b/c all this was happening to a child?. I dunno

it's probably just me, and I suppose, the more violent, the better the movie today???????? and on that, I will roll my eyes.....

I never heard anything about the movie, except it was brilliant.....???????

I just had to mention that I always know what the movies are about I'm getting to watch. I also read up. This movie was brought to my house by a friend who thought I would enjoy it because it was a fantasy. So I didn't have time to find out about it ahead of time. I'm not saying that the movie wasn't well scripted or well made. I just do not enjoy watching graphic violence, at all. That's just me, I know that, but looking at it from my perspective, it would have been a great movie without all of the graphic and violent scenes.
