I watched the movie recently. Gosh that was painful. The book is a lot better. She didn't really show the confusion that I felt Elizabeth went through. It just made it seem like; she wanted out of the marriage and that was that.

Hmm. I haven't seen the movie, but I read the book several years ago & loved it.

Not a huge fan of Julia Roberts, but we'll see....

I read the book all the way through. I did not find the character engaging, so I cared little for her problems in trying to find herself, something that we usually resolve a lot of around college age or shortly thereafter.

I tried the movie because it was on tv, thinking a good acting job might add something to it. Bor-ing! I could not finish the movie, leaving it somewhere while she was in India. This is odd for me as I enjoy India and what it ha to impart to us of its rich religious culture. This seemed just so shallow and self indulgent.

The whole experience seemed so devoid of any real meaning.

It is being repeated so often on tv now and some said the movie picked up in the second half, so maybe I will just tune in during the middle.

This is one of the movies that had a lot of hype but did not deliver, to my way of thinking.

I hope to see Julia in something really good soon to wipe this performance from my mind.

I have since seen this movie, and I have to kind of agree.

Though I really thought the book was great, Julia Roberts just did not embody the character I had in mind at all for this role...

I'm glad I'm not the only one who though it was painful
I read the book a few years back & absolutely loved it.
When the movie was being made I had high hopes for it (even though I'm not a Julia Roberts fan.)
Finally as I was watching the movie, trying hard to like it, I realized it wasn't worth my time. The book is so much better.
The movie is a time waster

Never read the book. Saw the movie last year. Seemed like a sorry excuse for ending a decent married life and switching to a confused and hippie lifestyle. Spirituality my a&& ..... if it took you to be so old and be married for so long to "find yourself" then you are just as confused and worthless as a 13 year old emo teen!!

Pfffttt...

The problem with that is life is always changing, and so are we. Nobody stays the same for their entire life. The book really addressed these changes people (women especially) eventually must face in their lifetime.

The movie failed to communicate this effectively, imo.

Once you are married, though, or have kids part of your dharma is your responsibility to them. You cannot just up and leave without their approval, like some star struck kid.

In fact, you should go through this soul searching before making commitments to others who depend on your being there. If that means never tying the knot, then so be it.

This 'finding one's self' can happen right in your own life. It does not require traveling around the globe. Your own life is constantly sending signals, giving lessons. Improvement happens from the inside, out. I forget her parting from her husband and her obligations, and there are valid reasons for breaking up, and yes people change, but there are some who on a whim decide they'd like to try something new because their life bores them. I got the impression, from the movie, that such was the case here.
