Everything Sergio Leone had done previously all comes together. Long, intricate story, excellent acting, long contemplative scenes, gorgeous cinematography.
And you'd never know that all sound effects and dialogue were not recorded during filming but added later in post-production.

Yes! The best western EVER and a strong contender for SIMPLY THE BEST. There wasn't a false move in the entire movie.

As I understand it, there were at least 3 edited versions. The original USA movie theater release just plain sucked, and it was just a "B" western with cool music.
Then came the commercial TV version (with TV Ads) but the sex scene with Henry Fonda and the New Orleans w***e, were cut out. and it actually made a good film.
Then there is a "Director's cut" I think they call the version, which is no doubt the really major league great film you must be talking about.
But my favorite film is To Kill a Mockingbird.
I have to limit the times I watch that film so it doesn't get old, and I start repeating the lines like I do with some other really top of the heap films.

I know the OP said one movie but essentially LOTR is a complete story albeit in 3 movies.
The Lord of the Rings - Fellowship of the Ring
The Lord of the Rings - The Two Towers
The Lord of the Rings - Return of the King
I voted for this as my number one due to superb storytelling combined with excellent cinematography, a believable cast and the ability to take me away to another time and place.
