URGH!!! Those previews. We have started making bets on them. How many do you think there will be? LOL!!! It is always 6. The commercials are AWFUL though. And has anyone else been exposed to those terrible little short films or whatever they do? The one w/ the two guys playing different instruments and a girl w/ one coin and they are dueling it out to see whose bucket she will put the coin in? It was WAY TOO LONG and painful to watch. I don't mind being entertained but this went on for too long and I did not go to see this stuff. The trivia stuff before the commercials is and was MUCH better, imo.
I do like the little clip the movie theater by us does now. Right before the previews roll after all the commercials a blank screen comes up and all of a sudden you hear a baby crying. It sounds real and the first time you hear it you start looking for the baby. Then another one starts crying, then a phone rings, then another phone rings then people start talking till all of a sudden they say, "please be considerate" or something along those lines and to turn off cellphones or to silence them and to be quiet.
The worst time we had at a movie recently was a row of teens in front of us at a packed movie were texting each other and their friends in another movie. Then the friends came to join them in the middle of the movie . The some of them left and it was a huge ruckus. It was a night time movie but we were on a date and had a babysitter for the kids so we could not hit the matinee time. Even during the day at movies geared for kids and families you see better behavior. A few weeks ago we went w/o the kids to an adult movie and the people behind us had the whole family w/ them. The kids were WAY too young to see the movie (mine are older and it was not for them either and I did not take them). They left several times - the kids by themselves. One sit and kicked the chair in front of him. Urgh. They finally got still and quiet though after they got enough looks. I did however have my cellphone but on vibrate and placed it in the cupholder between my husband and I. The ONLY reason I did so was because we are just now able to go out for some things and leave the kids at home w/o a babysitter (just not yet where it is bedtime and no one there). The theater is about 5 minutes from the house if not less so that is the ONLY reason it was on. Otherwise it would have been turned off completely. The kids knew we were going to the movies and they also knew they could call neighbors but if there were a SERIOUS emergency I'd want to know asap or I would have never let myself live if I had known I was sitting in a movie while something terrible happened to my kids. IF they would have called I would have stepped out of the theater BEFORE I said a word though w/ as little disruption as possible to everyone else in the theater. Most never would have known my phone was even on much less that it "rang" or that I even left for a call. There is a way to go about it so that it is considerate of others and not offensive or disruptive - it just takes common sense and respect.

I'm 25 and have felt this way for the last 5 years. I always hated people acting immature and trying to impress females, or the babies crying, or the parents who let their 5 year kick my seat back every 30 seconds(just when you think it will stop).
Plus the price of the movie is outrageous here in Los Angeles.
Here what I do instead. I have surround sound in a smaller 140sqft room and a nice 35" TV with speakers in the rear, 2 up front, one center and a subwoofer. I have Blockbuster online for 18/mo and can average over 25 movies/mo....WELL worth it.
Dont have to deal with the BS and more money in the bank.
Movies SOUND GREAT. I just watched Ghostrider, and although it wasn't the best movies...when you are sitting there and all the sudden you hear something scary behind you...its so much better then being in the theatre.

Spot on, Tiger.
Frankly, in my experience, the most obnoxious movie-goers can be elderly people. This surprises me, because they must have some memory of how theaters used to be. I remember being terrified of the theater usher in her white uniform, carrying her flashlight.
But the Noisy Elder disturbance has occurred too many times for it to be a coincidence.
Many's the time I have listened to them loudly talk amongst themselves as if they were sitting in their living room. When I or someone else do shush them, they act scandalized. How dare we want to watch the movie in peace and quiet!
I most often go to movies by myself, because my husband isn't crazy about them. If I can, I go on weekday afternoons. A couple weeks ago, I went to see Knocked Up and was the only person in the theater--until the last possible second, when a couple with a baby walked in. At a tender, quiet moment in the film, the baby started crying. The mom took care of him and got him quiet again.
Someone in the parenting forum mentioned that some theaters have Baby Afternoons, which I think is a great idea.

LOL, I know what you mean...I'd prefer to go to the movies alone, b/c I've found going to a movie with another female can lead to me missing the most important scenes....they just talk and talk, once I had someone behind us whisper, "Lady, will you shut up" sufice to say, never went with her to a movie again....
But yes, I've seen those kind of older people

Cil, that is too funny. As children we were scared to death of the ushers. Actually, I still feared the wrath of the usher why my son and I attended movies together. After they instituted the rule about buying candy from the theater concession stand, we used to sneak our treats in hoping the usher wouldn't notice. LOL

Back in December, I was in line for tickets to Rocky Balboa and a group of 13 year olds were behind me in line making all kinds of noise and just acting like complete idiots. Of course, they also were seeing Rocky...and they sat behind me. They talked all through the previews, so I got up and moved away from them.
They then talked for the first 5 minutes of the movie...and I became completely enraged. I turned and screamed "SHUT UP" in the most menacing voice I could muster....this did the trick, but I think it scared everyone else in the theater that was minding their own business. I'm a quiet, reserved person, but I had just reached my boiling point. My heart is beating faster as I'm typing this...just thinking about it.

Then, a lady on my row answered her cell phone. That's always nice.
Two girls sitting directly behind me carried on a conversation the entire time. They were doing "play by play" of the happenings on the screen. When a guy climbs onto a ledge to get out of the room, I don't need someone behind me telling me that "he's getting out of there". Thanks, but I have 2 eyes.
Young teenagers may be the worst of all though. They travel in groups and the young boys always try to impress the girls by making noises and talking.
Yep, I"m done. Not going back.

We quite going to movies about two years ago for the same reasons.
We anticipate buying the DVD of a movie we want to see. What makes it fun is the anticipation. We see a movie adervisted and we can't wait for the DVD. We usually buy it the day it comes out. What makes it so fun is that it can be watched from the comfort of our home, and if we need to take a quick bathroom or kitchen break, we can pause the movie... which you cannot do in a theatre. The DVDs also have delted scenes, bloopers, commentary, interviews with the actors - so much more than just the movie itself. Plus the DVD is cheaper than 2 movie tickets! And, if you want to see the movie again... well, just pop it in and watch. DVDLand is where we live!
