which is the best disaster movie?
2012?
Twister?
The Core?
Poseidon?
Armageddon?
River of Fear?
Vertical Limit?
Independence Day?
The Perfect Storm?
The day after tomorrow?
I loved Earthquake. I saw it at the movies with the "Sensurround" sound track and it was awesome. The theater sounded like it was shaking apart.
Dante's Peak with Pierce Brosnan was pretty good. It had the misfortune of being released the same time as the movie Volcano, which wasn't as good (though it was fun watching LA being destroyed).
I think 2012 has the most disaster overall, but I liked the asteroid disaster Sudden Impact which had the misfortune of being released around the time of another one- Armageddon.
Have to give it to Earthquake and Towering Inferno for great acting and plots (as well as great sfx for the time)
Too many disaster movies (and I include 2012 here) have lousy plotlines even though the SFX are spectacular. I mean how MANY times did Cusak escape certain death by a whisker? Highly implausible.
The best disaster movies are the ones where a lot of people die and that don't have happy endings. "Testament" with Jane Alexander and "Gallipoli" are my favorite ones although the people die off slowly in "Testament." The other one would be the 1983 TV movie, "The Day After" with Jason Robards which also does not have a happy ending. Small towns and disasters are somehow more terrible to me. The best disaster documentary is the very graphic "Night and Fog" made in 1955 by the French.
Please note: "Best" in this case is the way they were made and not a commentary on the tragedies (sending soldiers to slaughter, nuclear fallout, the holocaust) depicted.
Also, if you hear either Adagio in G Minor (Gallipoli for one) by Albinoni or Berber's Adagio (Platoon for one), you can bet something really bad is going to happen to a lot of people.

I agree with Laura, though I think the British docu-drama Threads was far superior to The Day After.
