The Deer Hunter is one of the most powerful and thought-provoking movies ever made. And, for a war movie, the violence is actually pretty minimal. It's the mental anguish that some of the movie's characters have to endure that is actually the most difficult aspect of the film for the viewer to absorb. The Vietnam russian roulette scene is probably one of the top two or three most anxiety-ridden sequences ever committed to film.
Anyone who considers themselves a student of way and it's effects on the human condition, or on the way the Vietnam War forever altered our country, not only needs to see this mive but is all but obligated to, I think.
Rent it tomorrow!

This is a war movie (Vietnam). There is death and physical injury in it but mostly it is about how war can rearrange a soldier's psyche.

It's beautifully made and very emotionally draining to watch. But it is also humorous in parts at the beginning and that relieves some of the stress. The acting is supurb. Walken won an Oscar for his role and well he should have.

I do hope you see it. I love this movie. Just be well armed with kleenex because you will need it.
I totally agree. This movie is a portrayal of an aspect of life that you pray you'll never experience.

I don't like to see violence...so had to close my eyes during the grim scenes. Otherwise...Excellent movie and good acting.
