I have many I could recommend, but just watched My Bodyguard (1980) on instant Netflix, after not having seen it since I was eight years old. Great, feel-good movie for those who haven't seen it, of a kid who gets bullied (by Matt Dillon, in his debut), then hires an overgrown outcast to be his protection. The old-school Chicago scenery is an added plus.
Isn't Freaks just an amazing film, I agree with you totally. My reaction on first viewing was about the same as when I first saw The Elephant Man. Both films really leave you thinking.

I like your taste in movies My Bodyguard is also a great film.

I recommend:
The Ghost and Mrs. Muir
Heaven can Wait
An Affair to Remember
The Bishop's Wife
Penny Serenade

Rope, an Alfred Hitchcock movie that you don't hear much about. Jimmy Stewart stars.

It's one of my favorites.

"The Best Years Of Our Lives" - 1946, Frederick March, Myrna Loy, Dana Andrews, Harold Russell, Virgina Mayo. One of the best "old time" movies I've ever seen.

The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter (1968) - IMDb

Alan Arkin plays a deaf-mute who is intent on helping people with their problems in life, but his own problems eventually consume him.
